Training and Facilities The Correctional Officer Trainee program lasts up to three months of formalized training. Training will take place at the Illinois Corrections Training Academy and on selected facilities throughout Illinois.

Responsibilities
Receive eight weeks of formalized pre‑service security training, including firearms qualification.
Undergo on‑the‑job training under immediate supervision of a qualified correctional employee.
Assist in running lines, yard, dining room, housing units, and perimeter patrol.
Travel by state‑issued vehicle to complete assignments.
Attend one week orientation at facility.
Learn housing unit work, report writing, yard work, and security procedures.
Perform other duties reasonably within the scope of the above duties.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Basic knowledge of resident behavior problems.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel statewide.
Eligibility to acquire and possess a firearm and possession of a valid FOID card.
Ability to pass background check, drug screen, and meet vaccine/medical standards.
Proficiency with digital technology and platforms.
Conditions of Employment
Completion of pre‑service security training during the trainee period.
Successful completion of firearms training course.
Ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
Compliance with drug screening and vaccination requirements.
Work Hours and Location Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.; shift and days off will vary.
