The Correctional Officer Trainee program provides up to three months of formalized and on‑the‑job training in security and custodial duties. The program is designed to develop the skills necessary to perform as a Correctional Officer in IDOC facilities across the state.

Essential Functions
Receive eight weeks of formalized pre‑service security training at the Illinois Corrections Training Academy, including firearms training.
Receive on‑the‑job training under the immediate supervision of a qualified correctional employee.
Be assigned each work week to another correctional employee to assist with running lines, yards, dining rooms, housing units, facility buildings, count, shakedowns, movements, and other duties.
Travel using a state‑issued vehicle to complete assignments.
Complete one week orientation at the facility.
Receive formal training in housing unit work, report writing, yard work, running lines, custody observation, chain of command, security buildings, disciplinary procedures, and other necessary training.
Perform other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the above duties.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation equivalent (four years of high school).
Elementary knowledge of resident behavior problems.
Conditions of Employment
Completion of a pre‑service security training course during the trainee period.
Successful completion of a firearms training course and proper use of firearms during the trainee period.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel statewide.
Eligibility to acquire and possess a firearm and possession or ability to obtain a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card.
Use of digital technology, tools, and platforms in performing duties.
Pass IDOC/IDJJ background check.
Pass a drug screen; use of unauthorized drugs is prohibited.
Compliance with all vaccine and/or other medical standards set by the employer.
Work Hours:
7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.; 11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m. (shift and days off will vary)
