Brief Job Description:
The Direct Supported Living Centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports. This role offers a purposeful career with opportunities for growth.
Shift Availability:
Morning, Evening, Night; may earn additional pay for evenings, nights, weekends, and maximum security locations.
Responsibilities Include:
Provide routine care—grooming, bathing, feeding, lifting, positioning.
Assist with medication administration and report any significant changes.
Observe and document individual’s conditions and behaviors.
Provide meaningful interactions and participate in individualized training and treatment programs.
Document information on the individual's life and activities in the required computer system.
Assist in transportation to scheduled activities, emergencies, and administer first aid as needed.
Evacuate in case of fire, disaster, or drill.
Prevent or manage aggressive behavior; administer CPR when required.
Drive a state‑owned vehicle as needed for client transport.
Lead as a shift/team “Charge,” supervising and monitoring other DSPs, maintaining a safe and sanitary environment.
May serve as home supervisor in shift absence.
Participate in disaster response and COOP activations as required.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs):
Implement habilitation, rehabilitation, behavior management, crisis intervention, and treatment programs.
Teach life skills such as feeding, dressing, and personal hygiene.
Participate in development and execution of individual treatment plans.
Observe and document health signs, medication reactions, and report significant changes.
Assist in transportation, administer first aid, and respond to medical needs under supervision.
Evacuate individuals during emergency situations.
Prevent/manage aggressive behavior; perform CPR when necessary.
Execute direct care and support services.
Provide training or mentorship to new DSPs.
Serve as a shift/team lead and maintain operational efficiency.
Participate in agency disaster and continuity plans as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of individual care techniques and developmental programs.
Ability to read, write, and speak English.
Clear and concise verbal and written communication.
Good judgment in critical incidents.
Calm response in emergencies.
Proper body mechanics and lifting techniques.
Administration of first aid, CPR, and Safe Use of Restraint (SUR).
Training, mentoring, and coaching others.
Teamwork and flexibility in handling assignments.
Mastery of basic individual care techniques.
Registration, Licensure, & Certifications:
Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
Out‑of‑state license holders must provide an original certified driving record.
Initial Screening Criteria:
High School diploma, GED, or 6 months of work experience (required).
One year of experience with people who have mental health/intellectual developmental disabilities (preferred).
Experience implementing behavior programs for persons with intellectual developmental disabilities (preferred).
Additional Information:
Writing reports experience preferred.
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks.
Male applicants 18–25 must be registered with Selective Service.
All employees subject to random drug testing.
Flexibility in work hours required; overtime and weekend work possible.
Employees must be at least 18 years of age.
