School Nurse Substitute

Overview Under the direction of the Director of Student Health Services, the School Nurse Substitute coordinates, implements, and evaluates student health services at assigned schools. The role supports the district’s educational mission by promoting optimal health and learning for all students, assisting medically fragile students and those with special health care needs to integrate safely into the school environment, and performing related duties as required.
Responsibilities
Promote health and safety of students through education, counseling, advocacy, and nursing care.
Oversee or perform specialized nursing procedures such as insulin injections, tracheostomy care, ventilator management, and gastrostomy feedings on campuses and field trips.
Instruct and supervise Clinical Procedure Nurses, unlicensed aides, and school personnel in nursing service delivery.
Collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and the educational team to maximize learning potential.
Supervise and manage the functions of the school health office(s) and ensure policy compliance.
Assess student health status and refer students/families to appropriate community and medical resources.
Treat first aid and emergency situations, including vital signs assessment, when available.
Develop and coordinate safe health plans for students with special health care needs.
Practice school nursing under the chief nurse’s direction in accordance with Nevada Board of Nursing regulations and state statutes.
Adhere to all Student Health Services Department policies and district procedures.
Qualifications
Education : Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
Experience : Experience in public health or school nursing recommended; 3 years of clinical nursing in pediatrics, critical care, or maternal‑child health desirable.
Knowledge
of the nursing process for preschool and school‑age children, school nurse interventions, first aid, emergency management, Nevada Board of Nursing laws, school systems structure, community resources, and effective staff supervision.
Skills
in health counseling, assessment, planning, prioritizing, effective written and verbal communication, and building relationships with stakeholders.
Valid
Registered Nurse license
issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing and CPR certification.
Applicants must provide two original BSN transcripts to obtain a provisional school nurse endorsement.

Salary and Benefits Salary: Teacher’s Salary Schedule. Salaries are subject to adjustment each fiscal year. New employees are normally placed on the entry step of the grade.
