POSITION TITLE: Director of Athletics and Activities
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Education Center
STATUS: Administrator – Exempt, Full-Time
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Athletics and Activities provides leadership and direction for the athletic programs of the Olathe Public Schools and serves as a resource person for the athletic and activity programs for the middle school and senior high schools in the Olathe Public Schools.
PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Chairs and conducts monthly meetings with the Olathe high school and middle school athletic directors and activity directors.
Works with the appropriate district personnel to develop guidelines and policies affecting the athletic and activity programs of the Olathe Public Schools.
Implements all policies that govern interscholastic athletics and activities, including the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) rules and regulations, the Sunflower League regulations, and the Olathe Public Schools’ Board of Education policies and administrative guidelines.
Attends all Sunflower League Athletic Directors meetings each year as a non‑voting member; but as a representative for the Olathe Public Schools.
Provides resources to aid activity directors, athletic directors and coaches in the administration of their responsibilities.
Oversees the process of obtaining BOE approval for all out‑of‑town and overnight trips.
Works to implement programs that will increase student involvement in activities and/or athletics.
Furnishes appropriate reports to the Olathe school district administration concerning activities and/or athletics as requested.
Serves on designated committees as the activity and/or athletic representative of the Olathe Public Schools.
Works jointly with the finance department to conduct the bidding process for athletic equipment.
Supervises the account that serves as the district’s reimbursement funds for state championship expenses for the district high schools.
Actively participates in league, state, and national organizations for secondary school activity directors and athletic directors.
Cooperatively works with athletic directors and coaches to maintain well‑equipped and safe playing facilities across the district.
Insures that all schools are equitably equipped.
Oversees the budgeting and purchasing for all middle and high school athletic teams.
Facilitates the scheduling of football, soccer, baseball, and softball games at the district complexes.
Provides media guidelines for the district complexes.
Is active in interview and selection processes for coaches, sponsors, athletic directors, and activity directors when requested by the school’s principal or district administration.
Supports the district hearing officer and serves as the backup hearing officer in their absence.
Supervises the manager of concessions for ODAC and CBAC.
Coordinates with the fine arts coordinator on all state and national competitions for performing arts programs.
Leads the implementation of e‑sports as an official KSHSAA activity.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent verbal, written and listening communication skills
Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
High degree of motivation, responsibility and confidentiality
Demonstrated ability in compiling, organizing, and analyzing data
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast‑paced work environment
Highly collaborative team player
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, etc.)
Ability to self‑initiate areas of opportunity, make recommendations for improvement, and follow up as necessary to achieve desired results
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position requires the performance of sedentary to light work duty, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The position involves having close visual acuity to perform activities of the job. This position requires some pushing, pulling, lifting, kneeling, balancing, crouching and reaching; frequent speaking, standing, listening, and walking. This position works in an indoor environment.
