NATURE OF WORK
This is a skilled technical and clerical position concerned with inspection, prevention and investigation components of the Fire-Rescue Department. Employees in this classification are responsible for inspecting buildings under construction and existing buildings/premises to ensure compliance with applicable laws, codes, ordinances and standards. Work is reviewed by supervisor through observation and analysis for adherence to established policies and procedures.
*Note: Base salary as shown includes 2.5% First Responder Pay and 17.5% Paramedic Incentive Pay. Shift Rate of $33.93 hourly, $2,714.77 bi-weekly, and $70,584.01 annually will commence upon completion of in‑house training. Salary effective as of 10/13/25.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Perform the duties of a Firefighter,
plus :
Inspect new and existing buildings/premises, fire hydrants locations, fire protection and suppression systems: including sprinkler and standpipe systems, mechanical smoke control and all fire related life safety systems.
Assists in performance and acceptance tests of all fire protection and all life safety equipment, evaluating their operational under working conditions.
Assist in the Department to provide and present Fire Prevention Program to schools, industries, business and general public.
Attend meetings, when required, to represent the City regarding matters of interest to the Fire-Rescue Department.
Prepare reports on activities, including recommendations made into action taken.
Subject to after hour or early morning inspections.
Subject to recall for after hour request as needed by Operations.
Perform related work as required and as directed.
EDUCATION
Graduation froman accredited high school or possession ofa G.E.D.equivalency diploma.

Class E driver's license and completion of certified EVOC program with an acceptable driving record
Must obtain valid Florida driver's license prior to hire
CPR Certification (Healthcare Provider Level 1)

Basic Life Support Certificate/CPR Certification (Healthcare Provider Level 1)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Physical
Moderate physical effort which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to twenty (20) pounds. The position requires computer usage and extended walking, standing, sitting may be required.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in the field. The position requires travel to perform inspections at locations within the City of Sunrise. Work hours may vary and/or additional hours as needed including early morning, evenings and weekends. Tasks are regularly performed with moderate exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
Sensory
Must have the ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Requires ability to adapt to frequent changes in workload and to adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate while completing tasks within established time frames. It also requires interaction with employees from all City departments/divisions and the public.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of laws, codes, and ordinances, relative to fire and life safety.
Knowledge of building construction, materials and methods.
Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of fire prevention, inspection, investigation and fire prevention programs.
Ability to read, understand and interpret plans and specifications, and determine their compliance with codes, regulations and established standards.
Ability to maintain records and prepare concise reports.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with departmental and City officials, other municipal and County employees, and the general public.
Ability to operate City vehicles and possess a valid and current Class D driver's license.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely and to understand and carry out complex, oral and written instructions.
Ability to withstand pressure of competing priorities and varied responsibilities and works efficiently and effectively to develop win‑win solutions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other municipal and County employees, and the general public.
