Earn While You Learn EMT Academy Lifeguard Ambulance offers a unique opportunity to earn a paycheck while learning how to be an EMT, with a full-time position after completion.
What is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)? The primary focus of the EMT is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for emergent and non-emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation, and functions as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight. An EMT performs interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance and is a link from the scene to the health care system.
About The Program The Academy is a rigorous multiple week program that qualifies the employee(s) to take the National Registry of EMT exam, then become a licensed EMT‑Basic. There is no cost for the class, and all books, tuition, fees and uniforms will be paid for on the student’s behalf. Upon successful completion of the class, all tests and state licensure, the employee will be transferred to an EMT position within the operation.
The Right Candidates Must
Must be 18 years old
Proof of high school diploma or GED equivalent
Successfully complete the pre‑employment screening which includes motor vehicle and criminal background checks, drug testing, academic/cognitive screening (Fisdap), and a physical agility test
Must have a personal computer with camera and Wi‑Fi capability
Have the ability to meet all health standards of the education program, including immunization status and health screenings
Essential Functions/Duties
Drive an emergency vehicle to and from calls, and transport patient(s) in a safe and prudent manner using the most efficient route
Demonstrate competency in handling emergencies utilizing all basic life support equipment and skills in accordance with all behavioral objectives in the EMT curriculum
Assist in carrying patient(s) by stretcher or other device to the emergency vehicle and secure patient inside the vehicle choosing the safest means of transport
Initiate patient treatment and care utilizing initial protocol treatment based on patient condition
Conduct basic life support skills
Obtain and preserve where possible samples of substances to assist hospital personnel in patient diagnosis and treatment as established by local operations procedures
Observe and keep records regarding symptoms of patients as established by local operations procedures
Communicate information to other members of the healthcare profession, patients, family members, and other responders as necessary and appropriate
Accurately and completely document all information required by GMR and the local and state medical control
Complete and submit all other documentation (i.e., Daily Check Sheet) as established by local operations procedures
Communicate any possible delays, customer service issues, supply shortages, equipment malfunctions, etc., to supervisor in a timely manner
Follow up with customers as appropriate to gain feedback on services provided, seeking opportunities for process improvement as established by local operations procedures
Inspect, safely operate, and maintain all equipment, supplies, and tools to meet standards set by GMR, local state, and local medical control; requisition and restock supplies, materials, and equipment
Check emergency vehicle regularly to ensure vehicle is in good operating condition throughout shift
Clean and maintain the cleanliness of GMR property, including but not limited to its vehicles, equipment, buildings, and surrounding area(s)
Maintain a safe and healthy workplace as per the standards set forth by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and GMR
Stay current with leading industry practices/knowledge base
Comply with all current policies and procedures; remain aware of all policy changes and information posted on EMSA, on company notice boards, company email, and by communicating with leadership staff
Maintain all required licenses and certifications as established by local operations procedures
Attend all required staff meetings
Perform other duties as assigned
What happens after passing the course? After successful completion of the course, the employee will be eligible to take a written and skills test through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Once certified by the NREMT, the employee will then submit the required documentation to the state to obtain their State EMT license.
