Summary Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager (or designee), and within hospital and departmental policies and procedures, the professional registered nurse acts as a patient advocate in the application of the nursing process. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patients.

Responsibilities

Recognize and report deviations from patient or established norms.

Identify deviations from established norms not related to the chief patient’s complaints.

Report patient responses to treatment(s) and document nursing interventions.

Provide basic comfort and support according to patient needs.

Foster patient and family participation in achieving optimum function and performing activities of daily living.

Set priorities in individual patient assignment planning.

Seek guidance and resources when necessary in the management of patient care.

Identify and assess emergency situations.

Initiate appropriate response and intervention.

Plan for potential needs during emergency situations.

Define nursing diagnosis and expected patient outcomes.

Modify the nursing plan of care based on diagnosis and/or outcomes.

Document on appropriate nursing assessment forms.

Implement nursing interventions and evaluate based on patient outcomes.

Modify plan or care accordingly, including documentation.

Maintain knowledge of contemporary, professional nursing practice within the Rhode Island Nurse Practice Act framework.

Attend training and retraining as needed to maintain current knowledge of hospital and patient care practices and procedures.

Utilize established protocols and collaborate with the health team to facilitate therapeutic interventions and desired patient outcomes.

Participate in quality improvement processes and risk management activities.

Attend unit‑based or hospital meetings to facilitate patient care management.

Function cooperatively and productively in the work environment.

Integrate complete physical assessment with nursing assessment and review records to develop a comprehensive and individualized plan of care.

Follow all documentation guidelines per policy and procedure.

Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control in accordance with established policies, procedures, and objectives.

Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Demonstrate self‑direction in maintaining and advancing clinical and professional competency.

Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns at each step of the care process.

Provide functional guidance and direction to LPNs, CNAs, and other licensed personnel as required.

Assume shift‑charge responsibility on an assigned unit when required, maintaining an overview of unit activities and delegating work responsibilities with equitable assignments.

Make bed and patient assignments and assign primary patients to staff.

Qualifications

Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island or by the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement.

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; associate’s degree required, bachelor’s preferred.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association).

Conformity to the Code of Professional Nurses.

Understanding of the provisions of the Rhode Island Nurse Practice Act.

Experience: Registered nurses should develop general proficiency as a staff nurse within three months of employment; for specialty units, appropriate general nursing experience is preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Prolonged standing and walking.

Exposure to all patient elements.

Repeated bending, squatting, lifting, and stooping.

No supervisory responsibility.

Pay Range:

$35.70–$71.40
