Job Overview The DOH Sub Nurse position will provide school clinic assistance and/or relief to any of the Alachua County Department of Health assigned schools. They are directly supervised by the Alachua County Health Department (ACHD) School Health Coordinator RN Supervisor in coordination with the Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS) Health Services Supervisor and the Principal of the school assigned. The nurse shall be responsible and accountable for making decisions that are based upon the individual’s educational preparation, scope of practice, and experience in nursing. This position will provide professional nursing services by coordinating and providing clinical services/activities in the school clinic(s).

The nurse will direct the work of a health technician if one is assigned to the clinic. The position functions under approved ACPS and DOH policies, protocols, and procedures. The nurse is responsible for supervising the school’s clinic, establishing safe clinic procedures, ensuring compliance with policies, protocols, and other instructions provided by the coordinator of health services or contained in department manuals. Nurse will attend all staff meetings and workshops as appropriate.

Responsibilities

Provide nursing evaluation, planning, intervention, management, and referral activities for students with acute/chronic health problems, including initiating emergency procedures as indicated.

Provide health education supporting the promotion of wellness, maintenance of health, and prevention of illness.

Monitor student health records, conditions, physicals, and immunizations to assure that all students have met and are maintaining state and local school health requirements.

Perform chart reviews for chronic illnesses, health conditions, and other health‑related documentation.

Notify school staff promptly and flag students appropriately in computer‑based programs.

Support, coordinate and facilitate health screenings of students per state‑mandated grades and/or guidance referrals, document and refer failures with timely follow‑up.

Collaborate with school staff regarding IEPs, 504s, student services meetings, providing input on students’ health needs.

Provide consultation and training with school health staff, school employees, and other agencies regarding student needs as appropriate.

Document all services provided to students in appropriate district format using acceptable nursing terminology on the appropriate School Board of Alachua County (SBAC) forms and/or computer program.

Collect and maintain statistical data to support the objectives set forth in the School Health Plan and complete the School Health Report.

Demonstrate initiative and interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member, exhibit punctuality, dress appropriately, maintain expertise, and model high ethical standards.

Complete required time sheets, activity reports (EARs), mandatory trainings, and possible emergency duty outside normal hours or days.

Secure designated information sets, protect confidentiality, data integrity, and appropriate access for all records.

Ensure proper computer proficiency, including typing 30 or better words per minute.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to learn and use Shot Scheduling, Word, Excel, Outlook, SBAC Web‑based Program, and other relevant software.

Knowledge of multiple computer systems such as HMS, Florida.

Physical Requirements

May require lifting up to 50 pounds.

May require the transfer/assistance of a student in a wheelchair.

Use of proper body mechanics is required and expected.

Mobility to traverse large school campus for emergencies and services.

75%–100% hearing and eyesight required.

Qualifications Minimum

– Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes; Rule 64B9, Florida Administrative Code; and American Heart First Aid and CPR certification.

Preferred

– Experience working with children.

Where You Will Work DOH‑Alachua 224 SE 224 St, Gainesville FL 32641; work location dependent on needs of the Alachua County Department of Health assigned schools.
