Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts . The office serves as Texas’ chief tax collector, accountant, revenue estimator, treasurer and purchasing manager, and is responsible for managing the multi‑billion‑dollar business of state government.

Division Overview The Unclaimed Property Division administers the state’s unclaimed property program and returns abandoned property to its rightful owners. Staff receives and processes property reports, provides claimant assistance, verifies claims, evaluates data for system implementation, and manages contract audit and voluntary disclosure programs. Owner outreach includes posting available properties on ClaimItTexas.gov and Missingmoney.com and mailing owner notices.

Work Schedule Monday through Friday – 40 hours per week with occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work; hours may change based on business need.

Responsibilities

Respond to email, letter, telephone, and web requests from claimants.

Research and generate claims based on written correspondence and telephone inquiries; conduct research on various property types (banking accounts, money orders, checks, traveler cheques, insurance policies, earnest money, escrow accounts, etc.).

Submit requests for documentation to claimants.

Assign, separate, classify, and index electronic and physical correspondence; track and monitor section logs.

Review, edit, and determine the validity of unclaimed property claims; process various types of claims (owner, power of attorney, minor, guardianship).

Document actions and monitor claims for completion of subsequent actions, including quality‑control review.

Communicate status and progress of activities to supervisors and recommend resolutions for reported problems.

Represent the section/division in meetings and planning sessions. Provide requested written information clearly and concisely.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university. Experience: 4 years customer service experience, 3 years responding to customer phone/email inquiries, 6 months unclaimed property experience, experience using Onbase software.

Preferred Education Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or marketing.

Preferred Experience Experience at a brokerage firm or interpreting and classifying securities statements.

Substitutions One additional year of full‑time qualifying customer service experience may substitute for each year of required education up to a maximum of 120 semester hours.

Summary of Physical Requirements The position is primarily sedentary office work but requires occasional mobility, extensive computer and telephone use, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. Reasonable accommodations available.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of unclaimed property statutes, reporting requirements, office practices, related regulations, and the unclaimed property system.

Interpretation of statutes, rules, and regulations; research and analysis of account information; mathematical calculations.

Proficient in Windows PC, Microsoft Word, Excel, and mainframe functions.

Effective communication, problem solving, confidentiality, discretion, and teamwork.

Adaptability and ability to meet internal and external customer needs.

Dependability, deadline‑orientation, and high‑quality output.
