Public Notice – DEA Criminal Investigators Drug Enforcement Administration is announcing Criminal Investigator GL‑1811‑7/9/11 positions open to U.S. Citizens. A formal job announcement will appear on USAJobs on 12 January 2026 and 6 April 2026. For more information, visit Talk to a Recruiter.

Responsibilities

Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities.

Prepare comprehensive criminal investigative reports and deliver briefings to senior personnel and other federal, state, and local agencies.

Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.

Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and other methods.

Testify on behalf of the Federal government in court or before grand juries.

Basic Agent Training Applicants who have not completed prior federal law‑enforcement training must attend a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts required).

Requirements

U.S. citizenship required.

Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.

Must sign a mobility agreement to accept relocation.

Must complete pre‑employment medical clearance and annual examination.

Full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph required.

Selective Service registration or exemption required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Age 21 to 36 at appointment (eligible veterans and former civil‑service law‑enforcement retirees may be exempt).

Pass E‑Verify employment verification check.

1‑ or 2‑year trial period during which fitness and public‑interest advancement will be evaluated.

Valid state driver’s license required.

Subject to random drug testing.

Complete 16‑20 week Basic Agent Training (BAT) at DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

3‑week transition program eligibility for 1811 applicants.

Qualifications Applicants must meet the qualification criteria for the relevant grade level. The following outlines the required experience, education, and combinations for GL‑07, GL‑09, and GS‑11 levels.

GL‑07 Level

One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑05 level, including: Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law.

Writing reports of findings, results, or accomplishments for law‑enforcement or court use.

Researching, collecting, and analyzing data for investigations.

Substitution of education for experience: one full year of graduate‑level education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): bachelor's degree with SAA in a field directly reflecting the job‑related competencies. Requirements include upper‑third class standing, GPA ≥ 3.0 or 3.5, or membership in a national scholastic honor society.

Combination of education and experience may qualify if the total percentage of requirements is at least 100 % (experience months divided by 12 plus graduate semester hours divided by 18).

GL‑09 Level

One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑07 level, including: Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law.

Collecting and analyzing data from various sources.

Writing reports and conducting briefings of findings for agencies.

Meeting or corresponding with court officials and law‑enforcement personnel.

Assisting prosecuting attorneys in preparation of technical aspects of cases or testifying before proceedings.

Substitution of education for experience: mastery’s or equivalent graduate degree, two full years of higher‑level graduate education, or LL.B. or J.D.

Combination of education and experience may qualify if the total percentage of requirements is at least 100 % (experience months divided by 12 plus graduate semester hours beyond the first year divided by 18).

GS‑11 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑09 level, including: Conducting or supporting federal criminal investigations in collaboration with other agencies.

Developing operational plans and determining investigative priorities.

Operating undercover, conducting surveillance operations, and participating in raids, seizures, and arrests.

Developing and eliciting information from confidential sources.

Interviewing and interrogating suspects.

Organizing evidence for presentation to prosecuting officials and testifying in court.

Substitution of education for experience: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three years of higher‑level graduate education.

Combination of education and experience may qualify if the total percentage of requirements is at least 100 % (experience months divided by 12 plus graduate semester hours beyond the second year divided by 18).
