Facilities Maintenance Lead Worker (Skilled Trades Lead Worker) The City of Lakewood is currently accepting applications to create an eligibility list for a future vacancy anticipated in April 2026. This role will plan, schedule, assign, lead and inspect skilled maintenance work across city parks and facilities, and may assume additional supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.

Responsibilities

Plan, schedule, assign, inspect, lead and participate in the work of personnel engaged in all aspects of skilled maintenance work including carpentry, painting, electrical, low voltage, plumbing, concrete, masonry, traffic signage and graffiti removal.

Install and repair building related infrastructure and assemble and repair playground equipment, fencing, gates and backstops.

Install, retain and break down equipment for special city events (traffic control, platforms, bleachers, emergency equipment and lighting).

Maintain and repair pool chlorination systems.

Prepare cost estimates of materials and labor for construction or repair jobs.

Assist with the inspection of work performed by outside contractors and provide necessary on‑site direction.

Assist with directing and coordinating temporary traffic lane or street closures.

Assist with ordering of building construction materials and supplies.

Prepare reports of time and materials used on jobs.

Assist in preparation of the department budget.

Assist with the implementation of preventive maintenance programs.

Assist with coordinating maintenance projects with other departments and agencies as necessary.

Utilize the computerized work order program to retrieve information, approve and assign work, and generate reports.

Interpret and work from plans, drawings and specifications.

Assist with maintaining facility equipment inventories such as HVAC equipment, electrical infrastructure, roofing, playground equipment and athletic field lighting.

May assist in the planning and design of facility related capital projects.

Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical example is four years of responsible work experience in the semi‑skilled and skilled maintenance of public facilities, with at least one year in a lead capacity.

License/Certifications:

Valid Class “C” Operator’s license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record.

Valid CPO (Certified Pool Operator) or AFO (Aquatics Facilities Operator) certification, or ability to obtain within six months.

Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) certification is highly desirable.

Knowledge of:

Standard practices of skilled maintenance trades (electrical, low voltage, carpentry, plumbing, painting, graffiti removal, traffic sign repair, special event traffic control, concrete and masonry work), water purification chlorination systems, safe work practices, stormwater pollution prevention, relevant codes and safety orders, hazardous materials handling, computers and common software.

Skills & Abilities:

Ability to plan, schedule, assign, inspect, lead, and participate in skilled maintenance personnel work; establish cooperative relationships; follow directions; read and interpret plans and specifications; produce accurate cost estimates; maintain accurate records; effectively use computer software including city work order and budget programs.

Physical and Mental Demands:

Ability to read/write, operate a computer and office machines; drive city vehicles; conduct heavy lifting (up to 50 lb), reach, bend, stoop, and work in cramped spaces. Requires normal vision and hearing, and ability to work under variable weather and noise conditions.

Benefits Package

Retirement: CalPERS retirement system 2 % at 55 for classic members and 2 % at 62 for new members. City does not participate in Social Security.
