Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

Pediatric Adolescent/Young Adult Benign Hematology

SUMMARY The Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients. Working independently and collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare providers, the Nurse Practitioner delivers comprehensive, patient‑centered care in accordance with state licensure, scope of practice, and organizational policies. This is a salaried‑exempt, full‑time position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Functions as an extension of our physicians and adjusts to fluctuating peaks in patient flow, acuity, and other operational demands while maintaining quality.

Prepares, administers, prescribes, and documents medications and therapies according to established policies and procedures.

Performs procedures, following successful completion of required competencies, including bone marrow aspirations, lumbar punctures, joint aspirations, and skin biopsies, with or without sedation and/or chemotherapy administration, and monitors patient progress.

Performs direct hospital admissions with local hospitals, discusses end‑of‑life preferences, and consults with sub‑specialties as appropriate.

Timely and proactively performs discharge planning; discharges patients and ensures appropriate follow‑up arrangements.

Collaborate with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare team members.

Handles triage calls and provides updates to the primary physician and/or nurse practitioner regarding patient status.

Participates in organizational quality improvement initiatives.

Participates in meetings and complies with communication policies to foster effective working relationships and reduce variation in practice patterns.

Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical records (EMR).

Adhere to evidence‑based practice standards, organizational policies, and applicable laws.

Comply with all Hospital Medical Staff Bylaws and policies, rules, and regulations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY The Nurse Practitioner does not provide direct supervision but acts as a leader to provide direction and support to clinical team members, specifically the nursing department.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Active Nevada State Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner license

Active Board Certification

Five (5) years of nursing experience

Active American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years Pediatric Oncology experience

Certified Pediatric Oncology (CPON)/Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology (CPHON) attained or within one year of hire.

Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) Chemotherapy Certification within one year of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to educate other health care professionals.

Ability to work in a multi‑disciplinary team, ensures that other departments and services are included in the healthcare plan.

Good judgement with the ability to make timely and sound decisions under pressure.

Manage priorities, workflow, multitask, and remain calm under emergency situations.

Ability to work collaboratively with multiple health professionals in a busy and complex environment using tact, diplomacy, and discipline.

Ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, utilize hand, and finger dexterity.

Frequently required to reach, bend and grasp.

Occasionally required to push, pull, and lift 15 pounds.
