The Team – The Kaplan Joint Center at Newton‑Wellesley Hospital (2014 Washington Street in Newton, MA) offers surgical and non‑surgical treatments for patients with joint pain. Our joint reconstruction and replacement surgical procedures offer patients a better quality of life and relief from living in discomfort. We treat patients with conditions such as degenerative joint disease, joint malalignment, ligament and tendon tears, and cartilage and labral injuries. We have brought together a group of skilled orthopedic surgeons who are passionate about relieving patients’ joint pain and helping them live active, healthy lives. From a person’s diagnosis, recovery, long‑term, and follow‑up care, we are committed to supporting our patients and their families!
Job Summary The role supports healthcare teams by assisting with both clinical and non‑clinical patient services under the direction of healthcare providers. Key responsibilities include taking vital signs, documenting patient information, scheduling appointments, and managing patient flow. This role involves direct interaction with patients to ensure their comfort and address concerns, as well as collaboration with physicians, nurse practitioners, and nursing staff to facilitate efficient care.
Essential Functions
Assists junior Medical Assistants with day‑to‑day questions and responsibilities and helps facilitate their learning by participating in onboarding training.
Shows patients to examination rooms, prepares necessary equipment for healthcare providers, and interviews patients to obtain medical information, measures vital signs, weight, and height, and records information in the patient’s medical record.
Explains treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients, ordering and organizing educational materials to reinforce patient education.
Performs general office duties, such as answering phones, taking dictation, and completing insurance forms, while acting as a liaison with other departments and advocating for patients with a positive customer‑service approach.
Collects blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, logs them, and prepares them for testing; performs phlebotomy if competence is demonstrated.
Maintains inventory of immunizations and checks expiration dates.
Provides immunizations (as applicable) which requires certification or 3 years of experience administering a vaccine and supervision of a provider.
Is responsible for improving appropriate departmental quality initiatives, such as two patient identifiers and hand hygiene.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
Basic Life Support – preferred.
Certified Medical Assistant – preferred.
Emergency Medical Technician – preferred.
Direct Medical Assistant experience or medical field work: 0‑1 year preferred.
