Overview Sewage Planning Specialist Trainee (Environmental Trainee)

Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

This 12‑month training program will prepare you to become a Sewage Planning Specialist 1.

Description of Work During the training period you will learn how to:

Educate, evaluate, and manage local agencies, sewage enforcement officers, and municipal officials in the administration of planning and permitting functions of Act 537.

Conduct and document evaluations of local agencies and sewage enforcement officers to determine overall organization and capability.

Provide detailed recommendations for corrective actions when problems or concerns are identified.

Assist with development of program guidance documents for statewide use.

Support regional training for sewage enforcement officers.

Meet with governmental officials to explain departmental programs and functions.

Prepare case documentation, including case history and prior violations, for use by compliance specialists, legal staff, and management.

Work Schedule and Compensation

Full‑time employment (8:00 AM–4:00 PM, Monday—Friday, 30‑minute lunch).

Telework opportunity up to 3 days per week with approved internet connection; otherwise report to headquarters office in Williamsport.

Salary is non‑negotiable in some cases (subject to posting).

Qualifications Required Experience, Training & Eligibility

Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology or a closely related field; or

A bachelor’s degree in one of the above fields; or

An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Applicants within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree also considered.

Special Requirements

Active motor vehicle license.

Other Requirements

Must possess a REAL ID; proof required at conditional offer.

Must meet Pennsylvania residency requirement.

Must be able to perform essential job functions.
