The Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board (SWWDB) is a private, non‑profit corporation dedicated to promoting innovation and providing quality local workforce development programs and services to businesses and residents in Southwest Wisconsin. SWWDB is currently recruiting for a
Peer Support Specialist
to provide direct, person‑centered recovery support to individuals transitioning from 5 Door Recovery programming back into their communities.
This temporary position is part of a disaster recovery employment initiative. SWWDB serves as the employer of record for all participants, who may work up to 12 months or 2,040 hours, whichever is longer.
The wage for this position is $20.73 per hour. The position is 30 hours per week and eligible for SWWDB employee benefits.
Work schedules will be determined by the placement site.
The Peer Support Specialist will use their own lived experience in recovery to encourage, guide, and empower clients on their journey toward long‑term sobriety. This position includes helping clients develop and navigate aftercare plans, access community resources, and stay motivated through one‑on‑one peer mentoring. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with treatment teams, social service agencies, and the client's support network.
A qualified individual must demonstrate empathy, excellent communication, and a deep understanding of recovery and trauma‑informed care. Candidates must also maintain strict confidentiality, complete accurate documentation, and participate in ongoing training to strengthen their professional practice.
Duties (Examples)
Offer individual peer mentoring based on lived experience to foster hope and personal empowerment
Help clients create and navigate their aftercare plans, with recovery goals and resources
Assist clients with accessing medical, behavioral health, housing, employment, and support services
Accompany and support clients at appointments and recovery meetings, as needed
Provide consistent coaching, emotional support, and encouragement
Report safety or health concerns in accordance with aftercare plans and protocols
Maintain accurate, timely records of interactions, goals, and progress
Participate in team meetings and professional development trainings
Minimum Qualifications
Lived experience in substance use recovery
Peer Support Specialist certification with a minimum of one year of relevant experience
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Strong working knowledge of community‑based recovery resources and services
Familiarity with trauma‑informed care practices
Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality
Excellent communication, organization, and active listening skills
Basic computer skills for documentation and email communication
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, and move between tasks
Ability to communicate effectively in person and via phone
Ability to use computer systems and read small print
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, bend, twist, and crouch as needed
Ability to drive regularly with a personal vehicle
