Specialized field work in the protection of life and property through inspections, investigations, public education, surveys. This position requires regular and predictable attendance at the workplace. In the event of a natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee may be required to perform emergency duties as directed. (Note: The listed duties are illustrative only and are not intended to describe each and every function, which may be performed in the job class. Performs field inspections of new and existing structures and facilities for fire code / ordinance enforcement. Completes and files proper reporting documents related to fire inspections, investigations and related work. Consults with owners, occupants and contractors to identify problems or violations and makes necessary recommendations; ensures corrective actions are taken to achieve compliance. Serves as a liaison between the community and the Fire Marshal. Strives to maintain and improve efficiency and effectiveness within the scope of their assigned position. Research new methods and techniques in the field of fire protection and submits recommendations as assigned. May perform plan review for compliance with Florida Fire Prevention Code. Attends public meetings regarding development review. Prepares and presents public and in-house presentations on a wide range of related topics. Responds to activations of the Emergency Operations Center as directed as an essential emergency employee. Participates in training exercises with the Fire Rescue Training Bureau. Performs work related to this job description and other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the legally established responsibilities and empowerment related to the performance of duties. Knowledge of building construction and features and characteristics of fire protection. Knowledge of code requirements, regulations, basic operational features, and fire hazards. Knowledge of the requirements need and purpose for fire cause and origin investigations. Knowledge of the essential equipment necessary to accomplish code enforcement and fire investigation tasks. Knowledge of proper labeling and handling of hazardous materials. Knowledge of policies and procedures related to the job assignments. Knowledge of code enforcement and corrective procedures for the hazards discovered during fire inspections. Skill in the use of job-related equipment, computers, software packages, and office machinery. Ability to maintain a professional composure and resiliency when faced with adversarial situations. Ability to analyze, interpret and understand data to make fact-based decisions in a timely manner even when faced with ambiguous situations. Ability and knowledge of code enforcement and corrective procedures for the hazards discovered during fire inspections. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with, a variety of individuals and groups internal and external to the County. Ability to respond intelligently to customer inquiries in a timely manner, via phone and/or email. Ability to work as an ambassador for Martin County Fire Rescue and promote good public relations. Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment. Ability to operate highly technical computer applications, such as GIS or CAD. Must possess a high school diploma or acceptable equivalent. Experience in fire inspections/investigations and/or building constructions. Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe and other computer-based software. Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License Possession of current, valid Florida Municipal Fire Safety Inspector certification required within six (6) months of hire. Other credentials considered: Fire and Life Safety Educator 1 or 2; CPR Instructor; Life Safety Inspector II; Investigator; Plans Examiner. Very frequent walking, standing, turning, speaking, hearing, seeing, color vison use, depth perception use, working speed, repetitive hand motion, holding/flagging, driving (vehicle/equip/other), hand/wrist movement.
