A visit from a Play or Fitness Mobile highlights any event, especially when a group might not have access to a Park or Recreational facility nearby. Mobile Units visit church family days, community block parties, health fairs & summer camp celebrations. They also enhance Parks–sponsored programs like Summer Festivals, Adventures NYC, and the Playground Associate Programs. The Mobile Recreation Vans travel citywide providing equipment & instructional activities from community events, which include arts & crafts and sport & fitness activities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Organize free and innovative activities in parks and playgrounds for children and their families, including sports, fitness and outdoor adventure, games, arts and crafts and special events.

Engage the community by organizing recreational programming and special events.

Distribute, collect and perform minor repair and adjustments to athletic equipment and play materials, including demonstration of the application or use of the material supplied.

Inspect play areas and report evidence of unsafe or hazardous conditions. Cordon off or remove hazardous equipment. Ensure proper health and safety standards of playground by removing broken glass, litter or other hazardous materials.

Uphold discipline and prevent disturbances within the recreational area.

Maintain accurate records.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and either: a) Two summer seasons, or six months, of experience as an instructor, counselor, or coach in an organized recreational program; or b) Completion of sixty credits toward a baccalaureate degree in an accredited colleges; or

Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above.

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 18 years old.

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required for all other candidates.
