Mission The mission of the Recreation Division is to enable all New Yorkers to lead physically active and intellectually stimulating lives through sports, fitness, outdoor adventure, technology, education and the arts. Recreation programs include specialized exercise classes, youth sports, senior activities, summer camps and free afterschool programs. Recreation programming occurs throughout the City in NYC Parks recreation centers, parks and playgrounds.

Major Responsibilities

Under general supervision of the Chief and Deputy Chief of Recreation, organize, develop and implement traditional and non-traditional sports programs and teams for the borough of Queens.

In conjunction with the Office of Programming and Strategic Management for Recreation, work with external partners in promoting clinics and leagues for youth and adult recreation center members.

Supervise and coordinate activities for volunteers, staff and community participants.

Motivate participants and provide feedback to ensure successful completion of sports programs.

Prepare bi-weekly program reports, update shared drive files and maintain attendance data for division leadership.

Create and distribute fliers, permits and mailing lists to promote recreation programs and sports team activities.

Promote sports opportunities to attract new members and work closely with data coordinators and coaches to encourage analysis and goal setting.

Produce event plans and implement outreach based on age groups (e.g., youth, adults and seniors).

Work on special projects and programming, such as Kids in Motion, Mobile Unit, Summer Sports Experience, Jr. Knicks, Citywide Flag Football, She’s On Point and Learn to Ride as assigned by the Borough Chief of Recreation.

Plan and implement quarterly sports clinics, sports leagues and special events.

Minimum Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and one year of satisfactory, full-time experience in recreation leadership; or

An associate degree from an accredited college and three years of satisfactory, full-time experience in recreation leadership; or

A high school diploma, or its equivalent, and five years of satisfactory, full-time experience in recreation leadership; or

Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. Experience may be substituted for undergraduate education on the basis of one year of satisfactory, full-time experience equates to 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university. However, all candidates must possess at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least one year of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in “1” above.

Preferred Skills Preference will be given to applicants who are current permanent Recreation Supervisors or employees who have taken and passed the Recreation Supervisor Civil Service Examination (Exam No. 5148). 1. Ability to work with a team on specialized tasks. 2. Familiarity with Brooklyn and Staten Island communities. 3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. 4. Available to work weekends and evenings as needed. 5. Valid New York State driver license. 6. Bilingual.

Residency Requirement Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.

Salary Range $59,891.00 – $68,875.00.
