Job Description Classification Title:

Custodial Worker I

Responsible for performing cleaning tasks in accordance with established standards and procedures. Areas maintained include but are not limited to lounges, kitchens, stairs, elevators, restrooms, bathrooms, and entrance areas.

Responsibilities

Perform cleaning tasks including dusting, sweeping, mopping floors, cleaning restrooms and bathrooms, replenishing supplies, laundry rooms, offices, public areas, cleaning vents, high and low dusting of upholstery, recreation rooms, storage areas, and emptying sanitary receptacles.

Remove and dispose of interior landfill, recycling, and paper towel collection waste from containers throughout the facilities.

Respond to unanticipated cleaning needs such as spills, graffiti, and other incidents.

Report maintenance, custodial or general issues to supervisor and/or complete GatorWorks request.

Ensure compliance with safety standards, OSHA, ADA and other relevant regulations.

Operate commercial/residential laundry equipment to clean and fold cloths needed for shift.

Assist with heavy cleaning during peak periods such as stripping, applying floor finish, and removal of furniture.

Perform occasional room set‑up and/or breakdown including moving furniture for events.

Perform cleaning tasks at the exterior of buildings (walkways, breezeways, entrance areas, windows, railings). Use equipment such as sweeping, shampooing carpet, pressure washing, window washing, electric/battery‑powered cleaners, blowers, and burnishers.

Remove landfill and recycling waste from exterior of building and from perimeter containers.

Assist in maintaining inventory of cleaning materials, supplies, tools, and equipment.

Perform other duties as assigned, including special cleaning tasks or projects.

Expected Salary $16.00 hourly

Minimum Requirements Completion of ninth grade.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge:

Prefer experience in custodial industry for university/college residence hall, large apartment complex or hotel; working knowledge of APPA cleaning standards, industry standards and technology; demonstrated knowledge of proper and safe handling of janitorial chemicals; familiarity with University of Florida student culture and campus.

Skills:

Demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to communicate with various levels of staff; attention to detail, professionalism, dependability, and timeliness; customer service and interpersonal skills.

Ability:

Ability to remain discreet and respect privacy of residents, tenants, and guests; function effectively in fast‑paced environment with frequent interruptions; handle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously; understand, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; work as part of a team in a multifaceted environment.

Special Instructions To Applicants

The normal work schedule is Wednesday – Sunday, 7:45 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. with a 30‑minute meal period; days off are Monday & Tuesday. Some overtime outside of regularly scheduled work hours will be required especially during peak times.
