Brief Job Description Come work in an environment where we truly value and respect those we serve and believe in the mission that all people can achieve a higher level of wellness and independence. The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state.

This position is available for Morning, Evening and Night shifts on multiple homes. It may be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights and/or weekends.

Responsibilities

Provide routine and emergency care, treatment, and training for people with intellectual disabilities in various settings.

Assist with grooming, bathing, feeding, lifting and positioning, medication administration, and observation of conditions and behaviors.

Offer meaningful interactions and participate in individualized training and/or active treatment programs.

Document information on the person’s life, daily schedule, responses to activities, training, and incidents.

Work as part of a team with guidance from supervision and training.

May provide training or mentorship to new DSPs and volunteer or serve as a shift/team lead (“Charge”).

Drive a state-owned vehicle if required.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Attend work regularly, possibly on rotating or overtime schedules.

Implement habilitation, rehabilitation, behavior management, crisis intervention, and treatment programs aligned with individual goals.

Teach life skills such as feeding, dressing, and personal hygiene.

Participate in developing treatment plans.

Observe for signs of disease, injury, medication reactions, and document accordingly.

Report significant changes in physical condition or behavior.

Assist in transporting individuals for scheduled activities and emergencies.

Administer first aid and act under medical supervision.

Evacuate individuals during emergencies.

Prevent or manage aggression and administer CPR when necessary.

Perform direct care and support services.

May provide training/mentorship to new DSPs and serve as Charge or Home Supervisor when absent.

Support disaster response or Continuity of Operations Plan activation, possibly with different shift patterns.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of individual care techniques and developmental programs.

Ability to read, write, and speak English.

Clear verbal and written communication.

Decision-making and sound judgment in critical incidents.

Quick and calm reaction in emergencies.

Proper body mechanics and lifting techniques.

Ability to provide care, administer first aid/CPR, perform Safe Use of Restraint, and Ukeru (when trained).

Train/mentor/coach others.

Effective teamwork and flexibility in work assignments.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications

Valid Texas driver’s license preferred; must obtain within 90 days if out of state.

Out-of-state license holders must provide certified driving record.

Initial Screening Criteria

High School diploma, GED, or 6 months of work experience required.

One year of experience with people who have mental health or intellectual developmental disabilities preferred.

Experience implementing behavior programs preferred.

Additional Information

Experience writing reports preferred.

Must pass fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities).
