Eligibility : This recruitment may establish an eligibility list for the vacancy at Northwest District 2: Shadow Mountain Module Crewmember - Granby, CO, and may be used to fill similar positions within the Colorado Department of Public Safety in the next 12 months.

About the Work Unit The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) serves to safeguard people and property, resources, and the environment in Colorado.

About the Position The Module Crewmember is part of a firefighting resource (e.g., suppression module, helicopter module, engine crew, or squad/hand crew). The primary purpose is to function as a National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) in support of fire suppression operations and mitigation projects such as prescribed fire, hazardous fuel reduction, and resource management.

Fire Suppression and Incident Response

Operate as a crewmember during fire suppression and incident response, performing tasks such as constructing firelines, cutting vegetation, operating pumps, installing hose lines, and conducting mop‑up and patrol operations.

Assist with ignition operations, rescue operations, and vehicle operations on and off‑road.

Use tools and equipment (chainsaws, shovels, drip torches, fusees, pulaskis) and maintain safety inspections and equipment repair.

Document incidents and assist with demobilization duties as required.

Support all‑hazard incident response, including structure fire, hazmat, search and rescue, medical, and other duties when trained and qualified.

Travel extensively for incident assignments, including to Colorado and the nation; assignments may last two weeks or longer and may involve travel by rotor or fixed‑wing aircraft.

Work long hours (up to 16 hours per day) in outdoor settings and perform strenuous manual labor under extreme environmental conditions.

Participate in physical conditioning activities for up to one hour each day.

Maintain flexibility in scheduling to meet business needs.

Mitigation, Fuels Treatment and Resource Management Projects

Implement mitigation and fuels treatment projects, including cutting, clearing, piling, and disposing treated vegetation; using equipment such as chainsaws, chippers, air curtain burners, and portable pumps.

Construct firelines, conduct ignitions, holding operations, mop‑up, and patrol operations.

Assist with data gathering and record keeping on fuels sampling, weather, and fire behavior.

Participate in physical conditioning up to one hour per day.

Fire Preparedness Support and Other Duties

Maintain physical fitness for hard labor in adverse climate and terrain.

Assist with inspection and maintenance of crew response equipment, vehicles, tools, and PPE.

Compile and calculate wildland fuel and fire danger indices.

Receive ongoing training in radio operations, incident command, and DFPC standard operating procedures.

Help relocate, train, and support training courses and outreach events.

Assist other DFPC programs as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications and Experiences

Qualification to NWCG standards as a Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2). Provide a copy of the IQS or IQCS Master record or incident qualification card.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

Two or more years of experience in wildland fire, fire service, fuels management, or related fields.

Prior experience with state‐level fire programs, preferably Colorado.

NWCG qualifications such as Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1), Basic Faller (FAL3) or higher, Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5), or Helicopter Crewmember (HECM).

Structural Firefighter I or equivalent (State of Colorado/DFPC).

Medical certifications including Wilderness First Responder, Emergency First Responder, or EMT.

Demonstrated commitment to public service and community involvement.

Conditions of Employment

Provide a complete training file upon initial employment (certificates, position task books, evaluations, incident history).

Attain additional training and certifications as required by DFPC guidelines.

Maintain a current driver’s license; obtain a Colorado‑issued license within one month of hire.

Be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.

Must be willing to travel to wildfire incidents, severity assignments, and pre‑position assignments in Colorado and across the nation; assignments may last two weeks or longer.

Familiar with flammable liquids and solids used in aviation and prescribed fire operations.

Undergo a background investigation including polygraph, criminal history, reference checks, driving records, and drug screen.

Maintain an Arduous Fitness Level rating throughout employment; achieve rating within two weeks of hire.
