Voter Processing Deputy Specialist I The Harris County Tax Assessor‑Collector’s Office is seeking a dedicated, detail‑oriented, and customer‑focused Voter Processing Deputy Specialist I to join our team.

Position Description This role performs a wide variety of routine tasks associated with registering voters and conducting elections: computer research, data entry, proofreading for accuracy, and comparing and verifying signatures. Ideal candidates possess strong data entry skills and an ability to work in small groups on detailed, repetitive tasks.

About the Tax Assessor‑Collector’s Office

Property tax collection – assess and collect taxes for commercial and residential owners.

Motor vehicle services – manage vehicle registrations, issue license plates, and handle title transfers.

Voter registration – oversee registration, issue certificates, and maintain an accurate roll.

Additional revenue collection – certain fees, fines, and permits as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain up‑to‑date records of voter information, ensuring all data is entered correctly and confidentially.

Assess voter eligibility based on citizenship, age, and residency requirements.

Professionally answer incoming calls, providing accurate information about elections, registration, and related matters.

Provide information about vote centers, voting hours, and election procedure changes.

Decide whether follow‑up action is necessary, such as sending forms or updates.

Safeguard sensitive voter information in accordance with data protection regulations.

Prioritize daily tasks based on urgency, monitor progress, and offer guidance when needed.

Address complex registration issues, discrepancies, or errors requiring further investigation.

Monitor and respond to email requests in the Tax Office Voters' Inbox.

Process registration cancellations, opt‑out requests, certificate requests, and applications.

Provide certified copies of registration records under the Public Information Act and Online Records Requests.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Employment Requirements Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

At least 1 year of clerical experience in a public sector or high‑paced environment.

At least 2 years of customer service experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Basic computer proficiency.

Excellent phone etiquette and communication skills.

Outstanding organizational and time‑management abilities.

Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Adherence to confidentiality requirements regarding voter information.

Availability for late evenings, weekends, and blackout periods during election cycles.

Ability to learn and retain large amounts of information.

Physical Demands and Work Environment Work is performed primarily in an office setting with adequate lighting and ventilation. Tasks may require long periods of standing, walking, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. Frequent volume and deadlines impose routine strain. Remote work is only authorized for backlog processing.

Working Hours Monday–Friday; subject to overtime, weekends, and extended hours during elections.

Primary Working Location Downtown – 1001 Preston St., Houston, TX 77002

Other Information Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards. Due to high volume, positions may close prior to the advertised closing date or at the discretion of the hiring department.
