Purpose Statement The job of Head Coach is performed to design and implement the athletic program for assigned sport(s) in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; provide supervision of coaching personnel; supervise students during all program aspects; use sound instructional techniques; serve as a positive role model and liaise with schools and organizations.
Essential Functions
Assesses student athletes to provide feedback and determine team placement.
Attends meetings, workshops, conferences to receive and convey relevant information.
Conducts parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets to inform and recognize participants.
Develops team and individual practice regimes to enhance performance.
Creates game strategies by analyzing opponent strengths, athlete abilities, and play styles.
Guides coaching personnel in instructional techniques, practice organization, and supervision guidelines.
Identifies program needs and recommends expenditures for equipment and supplies.
Implements practice schedules and related events to ensure efficient operation.
Instructs athletes to promote growth in skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Maintains records such as statistics, insurance, permissions, schedules, inventories to meet district and conference requirements.
Monitors academic eligibility and provides intervention to maintain eligibility.
Oversees assistant coaches, student managers, volunteers for direction and monitoring.
Promotes the athletic program through off‑season clinics, skill camps, and community meetings.
Responds to inquiries from students, parents, staff, media, and college reps to provide information and assistance.
Keeps the athletic director informed of issues impacting the program.
Provides prudent supervision for all athletes and students involved.
Explains the PVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct to all athletes in the program.
Maintains high standards of personal conduct and serves as a role model.
Ensures all coaches and volunteers are cleared through PVUSD Human Resources.
Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills:
Adapt to changing priorities; administer first aid; apply laws, policies, and regulations; coordinate with other schools and agencies; organize and communicate information; oversee financial transactions.
Knowledge:
Community support, public relations, equipment usage, injury prevention, relevant laws and regulations, eligibility and discipline guidelines, public relations protocols, safety procedures.
Abilities:
Communicate with diverse backgrounds; handle interruptions; demonstrate strong leadership; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines; model sportsmanship; motivate student athletes; provide consistent discipline; lead and build teams; travel to off‑campus events; work extended hours including evenings and weekends.
Responsibility Working under limited supervision following standardized practices; directing other persons within a small work unit; utilizing resources from other units as required.
Work Environment Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, with significant fine finger dexterity. Work involves 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing; exposure to temperature extremes and risk of injury or illness.
Experience Job‑related experience is required.
Education High school diploma or equivalent.
