Under general supervision, operators perform maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the South Carolina state highway system. Key Responsibilities
Operate motorized equipment used in highway construction and maintenance, including medium sized equipment such as belt loaders, rollers, and tractor-mounted injection patchers. Operate single and tandem axle dump trucks, including trailers, for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Assists in the operation of heavier equipment such as front-end loaders, motor graders, backhoes, and specialized slope mowers. Operate and maintain powered tools for tree and vegetation removal, pipe cleaning, and concrete sidewalk and gutter repair. Conduct safety inspections and daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment to ensure proper lubrication, coolant, and tire inflation. Operate salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assist in emergency or inclement weather operations; available for on‑call rotations and extended shift operations. Minimum Qualifications
Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved equivalence. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license and attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement. Additional Requirements
The physical demands for this position include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. The role requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
