Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system.

Responsibilities

Operate motorized equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges, including belt loaders, roller, skid steer, tractor and trailer mounted injection patcher, and combination tractor with side mounted mowers.

Operate single and tandem axle dump trucks and trailers for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations.

Perform skilled manual labor such as cleaning ditches, placing sideline and crossline pipe, patching roadway base and surface failures, installing driveways, removing fallen trees, cutting dead trees, performing vegetation management to improve visibility of signage and other right-of-way obstructions.

Operate and maintain powered tools for tasks such as tree and vegetation removal, cleaning pipes and ditches, concrete sidewalk and gutter repair and maintenance, limb trimming, weed eating, facility maintenance, litter and dead animal removal.

Conduct safety inspections and daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment to ensure proper lubrication, coolant and oil levels, inspected hoses and belts, tires inflated, and no leakages present.

Operate portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges.

Assist in emergency or inclement weather operations; available for on-call rotations and extended hours or extended shift operations.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Six (6) months of related work experience, or an approved acceptable equivalence.

Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.

Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
