Duties/Responsibilities

Assist with various welding processes to repair, modify and install various pipes, structures, foundations and fittings associated with shipboard hydraulic, pneumatic and water systems.

Entry‑level welding of steel, aluminum and stainless‑steel materials under guidance using in all positions on steel boats, aluminum boats, barges and shop fabrication assignments.

Become familiar with reading, interpreting, and following blueprints or technical drawings and understand associated welding symbols.

Set up and tear down welding workstations.

Cut, grind, file, deburr, smooth, and polish surfaces using hand and power tools.

Weld in difficult or adverse conditions and be proficient in multiple welding procedures.

Maintain good housekeeping practices, turning off machines when not in use, disposing of waste properly, sweeping the area, etc.

Ensure that all Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) is worn and that all damaged PPE is discarded.

Return tools/equipment to proper location and report any lost, missing, stolen or damaged items to the Tool Room Attendant.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

Possess a steady hand and coordination to trace fine lines, handle tools and small parts.

Handle tools; grinders, cutters, torches and power tools with oversight.

Knowledge of or ability to learn measuring and marking using a measuring tape, calipers and squares.

Learn to identify defective welds and ensure quality control.

Adapt to a reactive culture and adjust to different tasks and environments.

Actively listen, understand and carry out written and verbal directions accurately.

Ask questions when needed.

Education & Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent is a plus.

Welding coursework and/or certification desired.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 40 pounds at times.

Must be able to perform welding work while wearing all required personal protective equipment, including, but not limited to, a filtering face piece and/or tight‑fitting respirator.

May require working above ground (15 ft or more), comfortable with heights.

Must be able to climb ladders or stairs to reach objects.

May require working in narrow or confined workspaces for extended periods of time.

May require extensive kneeling, bending, walking and/or standing for long periods of time.

Able to comply with all applicable safety regulations, work under industrial repair conditions.

Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
