Under the general direction of the Pavement/Bridge/Drainage/Facilities Manager, a Senior Transportation Engineer, the Project Engineer will perform varied duties in support of the District 5 Maintenance Program. The primary focus is on development of plans, specifications, and estimates for major maintenance projects (roadway, roadside, structures, traffic guidance, electrical, drainage, TBMP and facilities) including those targeted for SB 1 funding. The incumbent will perform field reviews, identify possible solutions, prioritize needs, review and analyze the current condition of maintenance program assets, work closely with HQ and other district programs to meet objectives, prepare special reports, and coordinate with functional units for the preparation of project PS&E packages. The role also involves reviewing project priority, developing annual proposal packages, and preparing and delivering minor B projects and service contracts.

Location: 50 Higuera St., San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

Typical work setting is a climate‑controlled office in a primary open space with modular furnishings. Intermittent travel throughout the district may be required for site reviews, meetings, and field data collection. Overnight stays may be required to facilitate field work.

Telework may be eligible. The amount is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’ telework policy. Employees are expected to be able to report to worksites with minimal notice if urgent needs arise.

The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory 24‑month to 33‑month rotation for permanent full‑time employees who have completed probation. Participants will gain experience across Design, Construction, and elective assignments, potentially involving long‑term travel across the state. Incumbents may also be required to go on loan to other project delivery functions during peak periods.

Transportation Engineer (Civil)

Salary ranges: Range A $6,488.00 – $7,735.00, Range B $7,428.00 – $9,296.00, Range C $8,896.00 – $11,131.00, Range D $9,712.00 – $12,152.00. New to state candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or alternate range.

Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering license (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. PE license is not required for lower ranges.
