Mobility Service Officer – City of Houston
Position Overview: Expedites the flow of vehicular traffic by directing traffic and reporting mobility issues at locations throughout the city suffering acute traffic congestion.
Responsibilities
Respond to locations throughout the city to manually direct and expedite traffic flow.
Monitor major thoroughfares and intersections to identify and report inefficient or faulty traffic signal timing issues.
Seek out, remediate, and/or report roadway hazards that impede normal traffic flow, such as roadway signage, intersection sight obstructions, low tree branches, and impaired drivers.
Respond to traffic accidents to direct and expedite traffic flow and distribute State of Texas Driver’s Crash Reports when applicable.
Collaborate with Public Works and Engineering personnel to identify and report mobility issues.
May enforce municipal parking regulations.
Direct traffic at designated problem areas and major events.
Operate City-issued motor vehicle as primary transport means.
Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions The position requires regular lifting and moving of equipment such as traffic cones, sign stands, and temporary barricades (60 pounds or more) in various weather conditions.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED.
Valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with City of Houston’s policy on driving.
Must possess or pass a Class M Driver’s License course; if not, must attend and pass a state‑approved motorcycle safety licensing course and exam.
Preferred Qualifications
One year of general, construction, or law enforcement traffic direction experience.
Preference for eligible veteran applicants with necessary qualifications.
Safety Impact Position Yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and, if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
Salary Pay Grade 12. Salary range to be determined based on qualifications.
