Job Description Summary:

Under limited supervision, perform a variety of semi‑skilled to skilled maintenance, repair and construction tasks on the Flatirons Golf Course property and facilities. Provide training and oversight of team golf‑maintained properties. Perform related duties as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Acts as a lead worker by golf staff and operations, including:

Analyzes conditions, plans, prioritizes and assigns duties.

Monitors work in progress to identify problems and maintain quality output, providing leadership in solving operations‑related problems that arise in the field.

Responsible for hiring, performance management, and training of regular and seasonal employees, volunteers, community service workers, jail crew workers and others.

Oversees and tracks training programs related to equipment safety, IPM practices, wildlife management, natural lands maintenance and others.

Co‑ordinates work with other parks field staff to ensure timely response to ongoing maintenance needs, special projects, and resolution of identified issues or emergencies.

Assists with field aspects of contracted work; oversees contractor work and ensures completion prior to recommending payment; reports issues to upper‑level staff; ensures natural lands activities take into account other projects and events.

Co‑ordinates with special event promoters, other city departments, cart vendors and merchants to ensure safe and successful special events and vendor set‑ups (electricity, water, refuse collection and removal) and communicates risk‑management issues.

Prepares and maintains golf course greens, tees, fairways, rough and other general areas, including:

Irrigation management and repairs.

Maintains playing surfaces; mows, waters, re‑sods, performs aeration, fertilization, topdressing, overseeding and repairs turf areas.

Fabricates maintenance equipment and tools.

Cleans and maintains restroom facilities; ensures the golf course property is safe and clean for public use; performs vandalism repairs.

Repairs and replaces equipment, including warranty issues and all safety surfacing; maintains fencing adjacent to walks and paths.

Maintains an appropriate replacement and repair parts inventory and projects cost estimates.

Performs horticultural tasks, such as:

Planning, planting and removing annual flower beds.

Tilling, fertilizing, mulching flower beds, and mulching tree and shrub areas.

Pruning trees and shrubs and ensuring trees are maintained in safe and healthy condition.

Implementing the fertilizer program; performing chemical and manual weed control in all turf, flower, and shrub areas.

Performs turf maintenance tasks, including:

Performing mowing, edging, aeration, fertilization, topdressing, overseeding, and other related turf cultural practices.

Performing soil analysis and developing appropriate soil‑enhancement/fertilization schedules.

Providing organic turf management in designated areas; performing turf renovation projects (soil enhancement, sodding, seeding, natural grass renovation).

Performing natural lands mowing and reseeding; scheduling, repairing, and assisting in the installation of sprinklers, irrigation piping, and other irrigation system components.

Serving as Irrigation Lead in the operation and maintenance of the irrigation pump system.

Reporting irrigation, tree, or other golf course issues to supervisor.

Performing proper public notification for fertilization and weed management.

Ensures proper use of vehicles, equipment, and tools, including:

Obtaining proper training before operation.

Performing routine maintenance and cleaning of machinery, equipment, and tools.

Performing basic safety checks and cleaning of all vehicles and equipment before use.

Reporting all damage and poorly functioning equipment and vehicles to the Golf Equipment Technician.

Other responsibilities:

Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the City.

Uses proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.

Responsible for knowing and complying with all City and department policies; participates in professional training and development; and adheres to attendance and workplace attire policies.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability, under minimal supervision, to direct, lead, and coordinate the work of others. Crew Leader or Workgroup Foreman training or experience required.

Ability to work under minimal supervision.

Ability to utilize required safety equipment, including personal protective equipment.

Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Ability to follow OSHA regulations.

Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively.

Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with co‑workers and the public.

Excellent customer service skills; ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public in stressful situations.

Ability to work irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, or emergencies as required.

Ability to plan work activities, provide performance feedback, and schedule to meet objectives and keep accurate records of work performed.

Ability to pass a pre‑employment physical.

Demonstrated ability to act as a team member and collaborate with others.

Ability to perform record‑keeping functions; effective organizational and problem‑solving skills.

Experience using personal computers and software such as word processing and email; knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).

Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.

Acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree, certificate, or documented training in turf management, horticulture, or another agriculture related field.

Experience working in public environments in golf course management.

Experience with resource conservation in a golf maintenance environment.

Experience working in outdoor environments and/or high visitor use area.

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain successful organizational (internal and external) partnerships toward common goals.

Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to staff, volunteers, and members of the public.

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum of 5 years of job experience demonstrating knowledge of horticulture and Integrated Pest Management techniques, turf, irrigation, athletic field and structure maintenance practices, and general park and structure maintenance practices.

Minimum of four years of documented on‑the‑job experience and training demonstrating knowledge of turf maintenance, including cultural practices for high‑use sports turf, Integrated Pest Management techniques, and related horticulture, irrigation, athletic field and structure maintenance.

Ability to obtain CPR/AED certification.

Working Conditions and Requirements

Physical and mental effort: Ability to perform strenuous physical and manual tasks outdoors and indoors; stand, walk, and kneel; use long‑handled and power tools; lift up to 65 pounds frequently.

Work environment: Ability to work in an office and indoor shop environment as well as outdoors year‑round in varying weather conditions, including noise exposure; must work irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergencies.

Machines and equipment used: Riding and hand mowers, edgers, weedeaters, string trimmers, backpack blowers, power rakes, grinders, drills, chainsaws, rototillers, tractors, loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, utility vehicles, trailers, snowplows, and small power equipment.
