The mission of Gaston County Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) is to preserve and enhance the quality of life for the residents and visitors of Gaston County by providing superior quality Emergency Medical Service.
The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform.
Responsibilities
Supervision and technical medical support in the operational readiness
Response and transport of emergency and non-emergency patients to appropriate medical facilities for the Countywide Emergency Medical Services System
Directly supervising and evaluating the work of subordinate emergency medical personnel
Following and insuring compliance to Gaston County Policy, GEMS Standard Operating Procedures, GEMS Medical Protocols, and NCOEMS regulations and direct operations within those parameters
Auditing and checking Patient Care Reports for accuracy and supporting documentation attached
Adjusting or authorizing changes in an employee's work schedule, training schedule, and leave time as needed
The direction and coordination of Gaston County's EMS System operations and ensuring adequate coverage to handle incoming ambulance calls
Adjusting personnel and unit assignments to maintain optimum coverage during a shift
Observation and evaluation of departmental operations to ensure compliance with GEMS Standard Operating Procedures, GEMS Medical Protocols, and NCOEMS Regulations
On scene direction and coordination of EMS Operations when responding to a scene and has the option to assume direct coordination or command of EMS Operations
Preparing activity, incident, and statistical reports as required
Responding to major incidents to assume direction and coordination of EMS Operations
Responding to and assisting crews on serious calls
Responding to and assisting units that are lower certified and are requesting assistance
Direct emergency medical personnel at or below the EMT-Paramedic level in the delivery of patient care during a call for ambulance service
Required Graduation from an accredited college or university with an AAS Degree in EMT Paramedic or other closely related field with a minimum of three (3) years of experience and one (1) year of service with Gaston EMS required. Certification in North Carolina as an EMT-Paramedic with current certifications and/or Instructor in the following is required: ACLS, PHTLS, PALS/PEPP, AMLS, GEMS, CPR. A valid driver's license with no more than 3 points on driving record is required.
Preferred Five (5) years of field experience as a Paramedic with at least two (2) years of supervisory experience. NREMTP, ASLS, and/or NRP certifications preferred.
For all certifications: Documentation certification must be presented at the time of application. Failure to attach required certifications may result in your application being denied.
Knowledge of
County geography and road network systems
Principles and practices of effective supervision
Operation and utilization procedures for two-way radio communication and equipment
Emergency care, medical facilities, and their services
State of North Carolina motor vehicle and emergency vehicle rules and regulations
The candidate selected must undergo and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
In compliance with G.S.153A-94.2 (b), if the position being filled requires an applicant for employment to work with children in any capacity, the County must require the applicant, if offered the position, to be subject to a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI. These checks must be performed in accordance with G.S.143B-1209.26, which authorizes the SBI to provide fingerprint-based state and national criminal record checks to cities and counties.
