General Description

The Bookstore Student Sales Associate is responsible for performing a variety of cashier and clerical duties including accurately entering sales using the computerized point of sale system, reconciling cash drawer at end of shift, answering telephone, greeting customers, and assisting with other sales floor related projects.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions General Physical Requirements: Medium work: This position requires the person to occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force and frequently exert up to 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Physical Activities: This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to colleagues and customers to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

This position requires the person to frequently move about the Bookstore to assist customers and perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.

This position frequently requires the person to operate a computerized point of sale system and other office equipment to complete other activities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently operate a computerized point of sale system and other equipment that involves repetitive motions of hands and wrists.

This position requires the person to frequently use upper and lower body to exert force up to 50 pounds to pull, grasp, and/or lift materials or equipment.

This position requires the person to frequently position self to work with Bookstore equipment, to assist customers, and to perform the essential functions of the position.

Visual Acuity: This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

Working Conditions: This position’s essential functions are performed in an indoor retail facility.

Job Duties Job Duties (Position Specific)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. Accurately enters and correctly receives merchandise for resale into the computerized point of sale system.

Verifies beginning cash drawer at start of shift and reconciles drawer at the end of the shift.

Receives payments in the form of cash, checks, and credit cards, and gives change when necessary for the merchandise sold.

Enters charge amounts on authorized customer accounts.

Organizes and maintains cleanliness of store and around the cashier station, including stocking shopping bags and sales receipt forms, returning unsold items to the sales floor, cleaning sales counters, and vacuuming/sweeping the entrance and the area around the cashier station.

Assists in stocking and arranging store merchandise in an attractive manner.

Answers telephone and refers calls to appropriate individuals. Greets customers and assists in finding merchandise.

Provide exceptional customer service to all patrons of the Bookstore.

Advises the Assistant Bookstore Director on significant matters and supports the members of management in the achievement of their goals and operational purposes.

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, shelter in place drills, and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
