Position Overview: Working closely with the Dean, the incoming Chair will play a pivotal role in shaping and implementing the School of Dentistry’s strategic vision, driving innovation in education, research, and clinical practice. The successful candidate will be an engaging and forward‑thinking professional who combines strategic insight with a commitment to Marquette’s Jesuit mission of service and leadership.
The Chair will address the following opportunities and challenges: Provide visionary leadership; attract, mentor, and retain exceptional faculty; drive innovation in curriculum; optimize clinical operations; champion strategic initiatives through research and partnerships.
Responsibilities
Undergraduate Curriculum
Work with course directors and program directors; facilitate innovation in pre‑clinical and clinical education.
Coordinate with other department chairs and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to integrate curriculum development across the Department of General Dental Sciences and related biomedical science courses.
Develop annual curriculum goals, reassess competency statements, and identify resources for innovation with the Senior Leadership Team and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Review course content, exams, objectives, and syllabi to ensure uniformity and compliance with accreditation standards.
Implement assessment outcomes and ensure continuous improvement of the curriculum.
Graduate Programs
Work with graduate program directors (Biomaterials, Prosthodontics) ensuring adequate budget and facilities for resident activities.
Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Research and Director of Graduate Studies to maintain accreditation standards.
Faculty
Monitor, mentor, and advise junior tenure‑track faculty.
Recruit full‑time and part‑time faculty; establish annual departmental goals for research, teaching, and service.
Perform annual evaluations of faculty and course directors.
Establish faculty calibration and standardization programs with program directors.
Provide input to the Faculty Development Committee.
Staff
Assess staffing needs and supervise hiring and performance assessment.
Resources and Budget
Develop the annual departmental budget with the Associate Dean for Finance & Administration and Director of Academic Business Affairs.
Hold regular meetings to monitor budget projections and allocate faculty and staff raises based on merit.
Other Administrative Responsibilities
Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Patient Care on clinical operations.
Serve on the Senior Leadership Team, Clinical Affairs Committee, and Research Committee.
Prepare documentation for Promotion and Tenure with the Tenure and Promotion Committee.
Coordinate faculty recruitment, orientation, contracts, and other administrative matters with the Director of Academic Business Affairs.
Facilitate communication within the department through correspondence and meetings.
Implement the MUSoD strategic plan; evaluate and report on workload issues; ensure compliance with policies and graduation requirements.
Qualifications
A DDS/DMD degree from a U.S. or Canadian dental school recognized by the ADA Commission or an equivalent foreign degree.
Active dental license in Wisconsin (or eligibility).
Academic rank of Professor or Associate Professor.
Proven experience in faculty development, accreditation compliance, research, scholarly activities, and program leadership.
Strong knowledge of clinical operations in academic settings.
Commitment to student success and patient care.
Excellent communication, collaboration, consensus‑building, and management skills.
Integrity, enthusiasm, empathy, resilience, and a strong work ethic.
