Responsibilities

Conducts complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities.

Prepares comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports and delivers briefings for senior personnel and other Federal, state, and local agencies.

Identifies and apprehends drug traffickers and arrests individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.

Gathers and analyzes evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and a variety of other means.

Testifies on behalf of the Federal government in court or before grand juries.

Additional duties may be assigned based upon an individual's unique knowledge, skills, and/or experience.

Basic Agent Training Applicants who have not completed previous federal law‑enforcement training through another federal law‑enforcement agency must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program through another federal law‑enforcement agency may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.

Must sign a mobility agreement accepting relocation to any DEA facility.

Must complete a pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical examination.

A full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph is required.

Selective Service registration for eligible males.

Age between 21 and 36 at appointment, unless a preference‑eligible veteran or a current/past Federal civilian law‑enforcement retirement‑covered position.

Pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.

Will be required to serve a 1‑year or 2‑year trial period to evaluate fitness and continued employment.

Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

Subject to random drug testing.

Must successfully complete the 16‑week Basic Agent Training course at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Qualifications

GL-07 Level:

One year of specialized experience at a GL/GS‑05 level or equivalent.

Experience includes assisting in investigations, writing reports, and researching/collecting/analyzing data.

Substitution: one year of graduate‑level education or Superior Academic Achievement (SAA).

Combination of education and experience may be used if the calculated percentage equals at least 100 %.

GL-09 Level:

One year of specialized experience at a GL/GS‑07 level or equivalent.

Experience includes assisting investigations, collecting/analyzing data, writing reports and briefings, meeting with court officials, assisting attorneys, and testifying.

Substitution: Master’s degree, 2 full years of graduate education, LL.B. or J.D.

Combination of education and experience may be used if the calculated percentage equals at least 100 %.

GS-11 Level:

One year of specialized experience at a GL/GS‑09 level or equivalent.

Experience includes conducting or supporting federal criminal investigations, developing operational plans, operating undercover, conducting surveillance, participating in raids, developing information from confidential sources, interviewing/interrogating, organizing evidence, and testifying.

Substitution: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, three years of graduate education, LL.M.

Combination of education and experience may be used if the calculated percentage equals at least 100 %.

Additional Information

Appointments will be in accordance with 5 CFR 213.3210 (Schedule B); may be converted to permanent career appointments at the third or fourth year.

Probationary/Trial Period: 1–2 years to evaluate performance, alignment with agency goals, and public interest; termination without certification of continued employment.

Law Enforcement Availability: agents may work substantial overtime, irregular schedules, weekends, and holidays. LEAP compensation is 25 % of base salary.

Medical Requirements: moderate to arduous physical exertion, firearm use, inclement weather; pre‑employment medical examination required.

Firearms Requirement: authorized to carry a firearm, maintain proficiency, comply with Lautenberg Amendment; no misdemeanor domestic‑violence convictions.

Employment Drug Policy: Disclose current and past drug usage; past usage assessed case‑by‑case.

Mobility Agreement: signed agreement to accept reassignment to any DEA facility; family members must be prepared for location changes.

Relocation Expenses: full relocation expenses paid for individuals transferring from another Federal position; new Federal employees cover expenses not covered by DEA policies.
