Eligibility and General Conditions Applicants must meet all of the following conditions and qualifications. The role requires a U.S. citizenship, Top‑Secret security clearance, a mobility agreement, medical clearance, and a polygraph. Additional details follow. Duties Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities. Prepare comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports and deliver briefings for senior Federal, state, and local agencies. Identify, apprehend, and arrest drug traffickers and individuals engaged in criminal drug activities. Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and other means. Testify on behalf of the Federal government in court or before grand juries. Additional duties may be assigned based upon an individual's unique knowledge, skills, and/or experience. Basic Agent Training Applicants who have not completed previous federal law‑enforcement training through another federal agency must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached). Requirements – Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance. Sign a mobility agreement confirming relocation to any DEA location as needed. Complete a pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical examination. Complete a full‑scopeങ polygraph. 1811 applicants who have previously passed a polygraph may seek reciprocity. Be registered or exempt from Selective Service if born after 12/31/59. Be at least 21 years old and not older than 36 at appointment (unless veteran or retirement eligible). Pass the E‑Verify employment verification check. Serve a 1‑year or 2‑year trial period to evaluate fitness and public interest contribution. Maintain a valid state driver’s license and be subject to random drug testing. Complete the BAS training course at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Qualifications Applicants must meet one of the basic qualification requirements described below. Detailed eligibility requirements can be found in the DEA Employment Eligibility portal. GL‑07 Level At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑05, including: Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law. Writing reports of findings, results, or accomplishments for law‑enforcement activities and court cases. Researching, collecting, and analyzing data from a variety of sources related to investigations. Substitution of Education for Experience: One full year of graduate‑level education in a field demonstrating the requisite knowledge, skills, and ability, or Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) in a relevant field. SAA includes: Upper third of the graduating class. Grade‑point average of 3.0 or higher (various criteria). Combination of Education and Experience: Compute the percentage of experience (months ÷ 12) + percentage of graduate education (semester hours ÷ 18). Total must be at least 100%. GL‑09 Level One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑07, including: Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law. Collecting and analyzing investigative data. Substitution of Education for Experience: Master’s degree, two full years of graduate education, or LL.B / J.D. Provide FCIT transcripts if applicable. Combination of Education and Experience: Compute as above. GS‑11 Level One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑09 (private sector experience permissible) with: Conducting or supporting federal criminal investigations. Developing operational plans and priority assessments. Operating undercover, conducting surveillance, participating in raids, seizures, and arrests. Developing and eliciting information from confidential sources. Interviewing, interrogating suspects. Substitution of Education for Experience: Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate, or 3 years of graduate education to a Ph.D., or LL.M related. bracket possible only with FCIT transcripts. Combination of Education and Experience: Compute (experience months ÷ cco 12) + (graduate semester hours beyond 2nd year ÷ 18). Must be ≥100%. Additional Information All positions are exempt from the federal civilian hiring freeze. Appointments Appointments under 5 CFR 213.3210 (Schedule B) excepted service, with possible conversion to Career appointments at the third or fourth year. Probationary/Trial Period 1‑ to 2‑yearञ trial period applied. Evaluation criteria: performance, agency needs, organizational program advancement, efficiency. Upon completion, employment will be terminated unless certification of continued public interest benefit is received. Law Enforcement Availability Special Agents may be required to work substantial overtime and irregular schedules, including weekends and holidays. Availability Pay is paid at 25% of the base salary for the grade. Medical Requirements Required to pass pre‑employment medical examination. Physical condition that poses hazard is disqualifying. Firearms Requirement Position requires ákv, authorized to carry a firearm and maintain proficiency. Must not be convicted of a misdemeanor crime of lecturer domestic violence (under Lautenberg Amendment). Employment Drug Policy All applicants must disclose current and past drug usage. DEA evaluates cases individually concerning past drug use. Mobility Agreement Submission indicates understanding of domestic reassignment; applicants must prepare family and support any assignment location. Relocation Expenses Full relocation expenses are paid for individuals transferring from another federal position. New federal employees pay un‑covered expenses.
