Cancer Registry Specialist - Temporary Part‑time, temporary position with the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), located at 123 Robert S Kerr, Oklahoma City, OK. The role supports the Oklahoma Central Cancer Registry (OCCR) by collecting, abstracting, and maintaining complete, timely, and high‑quality cancer data from various Oklahoma health facilities.

Job Type: Temporary

Pay: Up to $27.19 per hour, based on education and experience

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, primary hours 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, up to 20 hours per week

Location: 123 Robert S Kerr (Office required). Telework is possible subject to policy.

Position Responsibilities / Essential Functions

Assist OCCR functions to consolidate reported cancer cases, review duplicate cases, conduct case finding, abstract cancer information from hospital records, clean data through edits, and complete follow‑up for cases reported through death certificates.

Process and maintain tumor‑specific and demographic information related to cancer cases in the OCCR database.

Provide support to a federally and state‑legislatively mandated surveillance system and encourage compliance with Oklahoma State Statutes regarding cancer case reporting.

Being present in the office is an essential function of this job.

Other Duties

Demonstrate knowledge of and support the mission, vision, values, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.

Work effectively in a team environment, participating and assisting peers.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma and four (4) years of experience working with cancer registry data; OR an associate degree from a Health Information Management (HIM) program, certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) and two (2) years of experience working with cancer registry data.

Current certification as a Certified Oncology Data Specialist (ODS‑C) is required. Preference for applicants with two or more years post ODS‑C certification.

Valued Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Extensive knowledge and experience in abstracting cancer cases required; strong understanding of cancer registry operations and functions preferred. Strong customer service and communication skills (oral and written); good interpersonal skills; attention to detail.

Physical Demands and Work Environment Work in an office setting, climate‑controlled, moderate noise. Tasks include talking, standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, carrying light items, using computers and phones. Requires long periods of sitting and occasional all‑state overnight or weekend travel. Presence in the office is essential.

Telework This position is fully remote and is subject to OSDH policy and supervisor’s discretion.
