The Position The Maricopa Association of Governments is seeking a qualified team-oriented student from Transportation Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Urban Planning, Geography or related fields for a paid internship. Undergraduate students in their third or fourth year as well as graduate students are encouraged to apply. All applicants with relevant experience or coursework will be considered. MAG believes firmly that all internships should contribute to an individual's professional development and expects a commensurate degree of dedication to the position.
This position will support the Data Application Program within the Transportation Division. The program encompasses a variety of responsibilities including the establishment and maintenance of performance targets, conducting transportation surveys, and the upkeep of data necessary for performance-based evaluation and prioritization efforts. To assist with these efforts, the primary duties of the internship will include, but are not limited to:
Transportation data processing and analysis. Analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing data used in the implementation of performance-based planning and programming. Development of software code related to the management, analysis, and visualization of large datasets. Working with various databases, spreadsheets and related applications. Assisting in project management, documentation preparation and other administrative duties. Conducting research and analysis independently or with a team.
The Candidate The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, detail oriented, able to work independently and handle multiple tasks. The candidate will have a working knowledge of transportation engineering, statistics, MS Windows, MS Office Suite, and have a desire to learn about other technologies required. Successful candidates will demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills as well as organizational skills. Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, R, Java, and/or statistical packages/languages is desirable. Experience working with ESRI GIS or other GIS software will be a plus.
Even though the position assumes flexible hours, applicants will be expected to work at least 20 hours per week on average during normal business hours. The length of internship will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications and performance.
