Applications Engineer Position

Hastings Manufacturing Company seeks an Applications Engineer in Hastings, MI. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required. Two (2) years' experience as an Applications Engineer or Mechanical Engineer required. Experience must include two years: (1) utilizing a working knowledge of internal combustion engines and conducting engine tests; (2) utilizing SolidWorks software; and (3) utilizing statistical and CAE analysis methods. Duties include: Support a Design piston ring pack using CAD software (SolidWorks) based on inputs from customers, bench marking data collected on the Application, Metrology and Metallurgy reports of ring samples, ISO Piston ring design guidelines, project objectives, and extensive knowledge and experience. Ensure manufacturability of piston designs by working with Manufacturing Engineering and Operations to evaluate sequence of machine operations, machine tolerance values, working range, tooling, casting cuff availability etc. Lead and prepare New Product Introduction Process (NPI) to review new business opportunities and initial Engineering Change Request/Notice (ECR/ECN) materials and work with all levels of the organization for successful launch of new products. Work with Quality team to evaluate returned product and perform failure mode effective analysis to identify the root cause of product failure in field using extensive experience of common failures and the visual signs that are presented. Create Metrology Reports by measuring piston and piston ring samples for critical dimensions, Ring Profile tracing, Ring diametric & Tangential Force, Ring End Gap, Ring Open Gap and other specifications with full understanding of how measurements affect product performance. Prepare engine test requests, conduct engine dyno testing, evaluate test results and publish final test reports. Request Metallurgy report for piston ring samples to identify the material composition, coatings, Material Hardness, tensile strength, with full understanding of how findings will affect product performance. Create Benchmarking report by collecting data on the piston ring pack offered by the OEM and competitors for the engine application from sources such as product catalogs and physical samples and compare ring specifications such as Type, Face Profile, Base Material and Coatings to help determine proper specification and design for company offering. Add and maintain product part numbers in Part Maintenance programs of AS/400 database system for successful launch of new products. Essential programs include Part Master Maintenance, Inventory Segment Maintenance, Product structure file maintenance, Routing File Maintenance and many other critical programs. Review and approve supplier design prints. Work with partnered suppliers to get pricing on RFQ (Request for Quote) on piston ring prints. Work closely with Sales in developing specific customer account strategies. Evaluate manufacturing cost of rings and ring pack based on lot size and annual sales volumes for product quote requests from customers. Support Director of Engineering in the transfer of research and development activities into marketable projects. Provide Technical support to customers on the product application. Provide ring prints as needed, offer explanation on piston ring functions and proper handling to ensure proper product performance. Develop constructive relationships with vendors, contractors, consultants and governmental agency representatives as necessary.
