Purpose Statement: The purpose of the Dean of Students - Academy Operations is to (1) cultivate a vibrant, positive and active student-centered campus culture focused on building student connectedness, healthy relationships, and student ownership; (2) foster high standards of integrity, excellence, and academic success; (3) protect the health and welfare of students & staff; (4) provide strong management, organizational and leadership skills; (5) develop excellent relationships with both internal and external stakeholders; and (6) directs and supports summer school programming.

Essential Functions: Responsible for assisting the Principal with leadership, direction, supervision, operations and accountability at the high school.
Supervision & Leadership Creates a collaborative school community where the staff, families, and community interact regularly and share ownership for the success of the school Collaborates with Student Service teams to develop comprehensive student transition programming to improve student connectedness to school Works with student leaders, staff and faculty to plan, organize, promote, supervise and evaluate programs, events, and activities to foster a positive and inclusive student body Creates and supports a climate that values, accepts, and understands cultural diversity and point of view Shares with principal the responsibility for protecting health and welfare of students & staff Assists students in establishing high standards of conduct Properly addresses the improvement of student attendance and discipline Coordinates with other deans to ensure coverage at all school events at which coverage is necessary Confers with students and parents on security matters; (5) Coordinates with outside organizations and agencies Assists in developing and administering practices dealing with campus safety and security Investigates and resolves all discipline problems in a fair and just manner Investigates student complaints and grievances Interviews students and witnesses in disciplinary investigations Investigate, adjudicate, and monitor infractions of the school code in the form of progressive discipline such as detentions, classroom referrals, Saturday detention, and in-school suspension Suspends students from school in accordance with Board policy and state law Re-enters students upon completion of out-of-school suspensions, facilitates student reentry meetings, and provides Peer Mediation to resolve student conflicts Maintains disciplinary records required by policy, regulation, law or good practice Presents the school’s case in due process proceedings for suspension and expulsion Oversees all matters of student attendance Communicates with parents, teachers and Student Services teams on student attendance Investigates attendance issues Assigns students appropriate consequences for truancy Determines if absences are excusable under state law and board policy Counsels students and parents on ways to improve attendance Oversees student attendance record to ensure all absences are adjudicated. Counsels individual students and, when necessary, works with Student Service teams to make appropriate referrals for testing, guidance or psychological counseling Assists students in establishing high standards of conduct Provides input as needed for student placement and evaluation Makes referrals to other professional staff members in the District Advises on modification of program to meet individual student needs Meets weekly with Student Services teams Assists new students with transitioning to school; Makes recommendations for appropriate revisions of and assists in the interpretation of programs, policies and procedures affecting students’ lives in school Confers with parents, teachers, counselors, related service personnel and students on matters of discipline and welfare Develops policy recommendations for the Board’s consideration and action Implements and enforces Board Policies Prepares administrative reports Provides and maintains appropriate communication with family and community, including law enforcement agencies and the judicial systems. Works with community and government agencies Works cooperatively with local police agencies and the School Resource Office on security matters Serves as liaison between school and home. Administers and represents the Deans, Attendance Office and Campus Security Serves as a member of the building leadership team Collaborates with the Associate Principal for Student Services to plan and coordinate work of assigned staff members Assists with evaluation of certified staff and departmental Support Staff. Facility Management Assists the Associate Principal of Facilities, Athletics, & Activities and principal in planning, preparing and implementing the Evolution Y115 facility plan specific to the high school facilities. Assist the Associate Principal of Facilities, Athletics, & Activities and principal in planning, preparing, and implementing short and long range capital improvement programs, new school facilities, and renovations and additions to existing school facilities as outlined in Evolution Y115 facility plan. Collaborate with the Associate Principal of Facilities, Athletics, & Activities the scheduling of major maintenance improvements within the high school. Provide supervision and direction to YHSA custodial staff and annually evaluate. Responsible for the daily maintenance and effective management of 70,000 square feet of internal space (YHSA). Monitor YHS/A maintenance services to ensure completion of work orders in a timely manner. Monitor/ensure completion of YHSA capital improvement projects in a timely, efficient, and economical manner. Coordinate periodic inspections of YHSA facilities to ensure compliance with health, sanitation, and fire codes and to determine needed maintenance and repairs. Consult and work cooperatively with the building level administrators in establishing a regular preventive maintenance program. Maintain and execute the YHSA facility management annual schedule/calendar to include all internal and external use/rental requests. Summer School Coordinate and plan the site’s summer program from date of hire to the end of the summer school program Supervise the site enrollment process for both sessions, including late registrations Recommend courses and sections based on enrollment and need Recruit, screen, hire and assign summer school certificated and classified staff Assign classrooms and offices in collaboration with Associate Principal Arrange for resources, supplies, technology, equipment, keys, copying, and other services as needed Conduct staff orientation prior to the opening of summer school Meet with students and/or parents, when appropriate, to maintain summer school attendance requirements Be responsible for campus control and student discipline Maintain accurate discipline, attendance, and academic records for summer program Supervise classroom instruction to ensure adherence to content standards when applicable Review attendance sheets and time sheets and sign prior to forwarding them to the district office Make changes in the summer school site master schedule or staffing when summer school begins as necessary Prepare summer school reports as required Conduct end-of-session check-out process with all certificated staff Organizational Leadership Serves on the Building Leadership Team; collaborate with team to determine school-wide professional development, curriculum, assessment, and program needs to meet all school goals Communicates and implements the school’s instructional vision Provides leadership for campus culture, student discipline, and student attendance initiatives Promotes the use of data driven decision making in various contexts Leads school improvement activities, development and evaluation, and ensures compliance with state and federal mandates, district policies, and state and national standards.
