PTS is looking for a substation design engineer to join a leading EPC. In this role you will utilize knowledge of 34.5kV to 500kV to support physical, as well as protection and control practices.
Duties & Responsibilities:

  • May be required to perform a range of functions as needed to support project and team objectives.
  • Collaborate within a project team to develop comprehensive design documents and drawings, including wiring diagrams from schematics, bills of materials, and field mark-ups for as-built drawings, with minimal supervision.
  • Conduct engineering support activities such as relay burden analysis, lighting calculations, load flow studies, and short circuit calculations independently or with limited oversight.
  • Utilize engineering application software to perform technical tasks including ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and electrical system studies (load flow and short circuit) with minimal supervision.
  • Review project schedules and coordinate with project engineers to maintain project timelines and deliverables.
  • Interpret and apply relevant engineering standards such as NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI to all design and engineering work.
  • Utilize and maintain accuracy within the document management system to support project documentation and version control.
  • Adhere to and implement corporate engineering standards and best practices throughout project execution.
  • Provide oversight and supervision for specific project activities as assigned.
  • Maintain clear communication and coordination with project engineers, client representatives, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Visit job sites to gain practical, hands-on experience and further training in substation construction and design practices.
  • Accept personal accountability for the accuracy, quality, and completeness of assigned work.
  • Proactively identify potential project-related issues and communicate them, along with recommended solutions, to the appropriate personnel.
  • Travel as needed for project assignments, including occasional short-term out-of-town trips.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned to support project and departmental needs.
Minimum Qualifications / Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution.
  • 3+ years of substation design experience.
  • Familiarity with protective relays and metering equipment in utility substations (138kV and above).
  • Experience developing relay protection schematics, control systems, connection diagrams, and cabling layouts.
  • Strong knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals, three-phase power systems, per-unit calculations, and symmetrical components.
  • Understanding of substation components, their functions, and applicable design documents.
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI standards.
  • Proficient with standard office software (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Relay coordination experience a plus.
