Location:
Detroit area (Novi, MI office)
Note: Occasional travel to Illinois for training may be required. Position primarily based in Novi.
Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Technical Service Engineer to join our growing team in Novi, Michigan. This role involves equipment installation, electrical troubleshooting, and repair services for high-precision technical systems used primarily by Japanese-affiliated clients across the U.S. The position includes both in-office and on-site technical support and supervision.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the technical foundation of our Novi office, which is transitioning into a regional technical hub. Japanese language proficiency and electrical diagram reading ability are strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Inside Services (25%)

• Read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings
• Learn and understand technical specifications of supplier equipment
• Design utility and mechanical system layouts
• Repair, modify, and order parts for existing equipment
• Support quotation creation and process repair shipments
• Guide junior service team members and manage repair tools

On-site Services (25%)

• Install and maintain equipment at customer sites
• Provide temporary maintenance and liaise with suppliers (email, phone, online)
• Attend on-site construction and installation coordination meetings
• Participate in business travel with other engineers or business partners

Supervisory (40%)

• Train and mentor junior technicians
• Supervise on-site projects and ensure customer satisfaction
• Report task status and team performance to management

General Duties (10%)

• Research and understand product markets
• Support special projects and administrative duties
• Maintain communication with internal stakeholders
• Ensure safety and cleanliness of work environment

Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience

• Ability to read and design electrical schematics
• Basic knowledge of circuit design and repair tools
• Strong communication skills, particularly in technical contexts
• Up to 5 years of relevant experience in machine or tooling design
• Valid driver's license

Preferred

• Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
• Japanese language proficiency (fluent level preferred)
• Familiarity with Japanese manufacturing standards or clients

Additional Details

• Salary Range: $70,000-$80,000
• Work Hours: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (includes 1-hour total break)
• Work Setup: Primarily on-site
• Office: Currently in a shared space; plan to open dedicated office in January
• Travel:

Domestic (up to 2 trips/month, 3-4 days each)
Training in Japan may be available
Per diem up to $300/week for travel
