PACO Group is partnering with WMATA to deliver expert structural-engineering support for the Department of Tracks & Structures. Established in 1967 under an interstate compact among DC, Maryland, and Virginia, WMATA operates one of the nation's largest multi-modal transit systems-Metrorail, Metrobus, and MetroAccess-serving nearly one million weekday riders. As a Structural Engineer on this team, you will apply your deep technical expertise to assess, design, and rehabilitate critical track-related structures (bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and station platforms) as part of WMATA's ongoing maintenance-of-way modernization. Your analyses and recommendations will directly influence asset-management decisions and ensure the safety and reliability of WMATA's fixed-asset network.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform structural assessments of existing track-related infrastructure (bridges, walls, tunnels, decks) using field inspections, nondestructive evaluation data, and review of as-built drawings
- Develop design calculations and rehabilitation plans in accordance with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, WMATA standards, and applicable codes
- Prepare detailed structural drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for repair/rehabilitation projects
- Support WMATA's capital-planning and preventive-maintenance programs by identifying risk-based intervention strategies
- Coordinate with Track & Structures maintenance crews, QA/QC, and project-controls teams to integrate structural work into the master schedule
- Review and approve shop drawings, submittals, and contractor-generated repair proposals
- Maintain all project documentation-including inspection reports, calculation logs, and drawing archives-in WMATA's document-control system
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in DC, MD, or VA (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
- 7 years' experience in structural analysis and design for heavy-civil or rail infrastructure projects
- Proficiency with structural-analysis software (e.g., SAP2000, STAAD.Pro) and AutoCAD/Revit
- Thorough knowledge of AASHTO LRFD, ACI, and relevant building codes
- Strong report-writing skills and experience preparing deliverables for public-agency review
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities; experience coordinating multi-discipline design efforts
