Job Description: Commissioning Engineer III or Principal Project Engineer
Classification: Full-time, Exempt
Location: On-Site
Travel Requirements: 75% or more travel for long periods
SUMMARY
The Commissioning Engineer III is responsible for leading the testing and commissioning of substation protection and control systems for our clients.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- n
- Lead onsite testing and commissioning activities for all substation-related equipment to maintain project schedules and deadlines. n
- Develop substation energization plans and lead operation and maintenance programs. n
- Provide technical guidance to ensure adherence to industry standards and best practices. n
- Maintain a safe workplace and implement safe and environmentally sound work practices, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations. n
- Conduct safety assessments and briefings with the testing crew, outlining current job site conditions, power system status, and emergency response procedures. n
- Review substation drawings and conduct point-to-point checks. n
- Develop substation equipment and protective relay commissioning and testing procedures. n
- Modify, test, and commission substation Data Concentrator Units (DCU) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). n
- Download Sequence of Event records and COMTRADE files as part of relay event analysis. n
- Prepare and deliver technical reports and documentation. n
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and contractors to ensure project success. n
- Keep stakeholders updated and abreast of project status. n
- Perform data analysis and assist in troubleshooting electrical issues, following all applicable safety regulations. n
- Perform other duties as assigned. n
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- n
- Must be able to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 75 pounds. n
- Frequent standing and walking for extended periods, often over uneven terrain or in tight spaces. n
- Regular bending, kneeling, and stooping to collect samples or operate equipment at ground level. n
- Frequent and repetitive motions, such as reaching, stretching, twisting, and turning, are common. n
- Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle, control, and operate tools, devices, and small components. n
- Occasional climbing on slopes, embankments, or ladders. n
- Must have clear vision (with or without corrective lenses) for close work and distance judgment. n
- Adequate hearing and speech for communicating in noisy environments and hearing site safety instructions. n
- Extended exposure to outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, mud, and noise, for extended periods. n
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- n
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 10 years of power industry experience, or a similar combination. n
- Strong understanding of power systems, including , transmission, and distribution. n
- Protection relay and automation device configuration and testing knowledge. n
- Troubleshooting skills in protection and control, automation, HMI, or relay networks. n
- Passion for renewable energy and sustainable solutions. n
- Excellent listening, reading, communication (technical, written, & verbal), attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. n
- Valid drivers license and ability to travel frequently to job sites. n
- NETA training or certification, . n
