We are seeking a strategic and passionate Payroll leader to drive and elevate payroll operations across North America. This role leads a high-performing team focused on delivering accurate, compliant, and timely payroll with zero margin for error.
More than transactional, this position requires a hands-on operator and people leader who thrives in complexity, champions process standardization through Workday, and prioritizes both employee experience and financial integrity. The ideal candidate brings deep payroll expertise, strong regulatory and financial acumen, and a commitment to service, excellence, and resilience.
Duties And Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Governance Set and execute the payroll strategy for the North American region in alignment with company priorities. Lead the unification of all payroll operations into Workday, transitioning local payroll systems into a centralized model. Drive transformation initiatives to streamline processes, improve internal controls, and ensure best-in-class service delivery. Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on payroll-related risks, performance, and compliance posture. Operational Excellence Oversee the accurate processing of multi-state U.S. and Canadian payroll, special payments, garnishments, tax withholdings, and benefit deductions. Ensure absolute accuracy, timeliness, and compliance in payroll operations. Maintain a hands-on approach and operational depth to ensure continuity and quality across all touchpoints. Manage payroll-related implications for expats and mobile employees. Monitor regulatory changes and ensure proactive compliance. Manage relationships with external payroll vendors, ensuring performance against SLAs, cost efficiency, and compliance standards. Establish and monitor payroll KPIs, providing regular reporting and insight to Finance and HR leadership. Ensure payroll processes follow robust internal controls and support all internal and external audits, including payroll reconciliations and documentation of key procedures. People & Team Leadership Develop, coach, and inspire a team of payroll professionals to deliver with excellence, integrity, and purpose. Cultivate a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Identify and build future leadership within the team; foster cross-functional learning and upskilling. Partnership & Collaboration Build strong, trusting relationships with Finance, HR, Legal, IT, and site leadership. Represent payroll in M&A due diligence, onboarding, and integration efforts. Collaborate with HRIS and IT teams to maintain and optimize Workday Time & Payroll systems. Act as the internal and external face of payroll, ensuring transparency and proactive communication. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Education/Certifications and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related discipline preferred. Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation strongly preferred (or equivalent international certification). 10+ years of payroll experience in a complex, multi-entity, multi-state environment, including Canadian payroll. 5+ years in a leadership role managing teams, systems, and large-scale payroll functions. Proven experience implementing and managing Workday payroll and time solutions. Demonstrated success in transforming and centralizing payroll operations across multiple regions/sites.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Proficient use of a computer, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote), and other related applications or software. Payroll Mastery: Deep knowledge of payroll laws, systems, tax regulations, and compliance requirements across the U.S. and Canada. Financial Acumen: Ability to interpret payroll data, support audits, and partner closely with Finance to ensure proper accounting and reporting. Leadership & Influence: A developer of people who can inspire, guide, and empower teams while holding high standards. Change Management: Skilled at leading through ambiguity, managing transitions, and gaining buy-in across diverse stakeholder groups. Resilience Under Pressure: Demonstrated ability to remain focused, accurate, and composed in high-stakes environments. System Savvy: Advanced knowledge of Workday Payroll & Time Tracking; strong proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Manage multiple direct reports including but not limited to: Analyst(s) and Specialist(s). Work requires supervising and monitoring work performance of direct reports including making final decisions on hiring and disciplinary actions, evaluating program/work objectives and effectiveness, and realigning work and staffing assignments, as needed. Develop functional responsibilities of individuals that report to this position and ensure that best in-class output is created.
Working Conditions And Physical Effort
Typical work in an office environment. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up and carry 15 pounds at times. Travel on an as-needed basis, which may vary depending on business requirements (up to 15%).

$101,023.00 - $189,457.00
