San Luis Ambulance (SLA) is a privately owned Emergency and Non-emergency ambulance service dedicated to saving lives. nSLA employs over 145 staff members, including Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians, Registered Nurses, Mechanics, Maintenance, and Office support staff. There are nine crew stations located throughout San Luis Obispo County for rapid response to 911 calls.
nSLA is seeking a Full-time Fleet Mechanic with a passion to play a vital role in maintaining and managing our fleet of support vehicles. We are seeking a skilled professional with a minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience in fleet vehicle maintenance, including both diesel and gasoline engine repairs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in diagnosing, servicing, and repairing a wide range of fleet vehicles and equipment, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operation. This position is non-exempt, with a wage ranging from $34.00 - $44.00/hour. Excellent welfare benefits are offered, effective the first of the month following 30 days of continuous employment.
nJob Summary:
nThe Fleet Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing ambulances, support vehicles, and specialized equipment such as ambulance gurneys, ensuring compliance with industry and company standards. Under the general supervision and direction of the Fleet Mechanic Manager.
nDuties Include (but not limited to):

- Perform routine preventative maintenance and inspections on fleet vehicles. n
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues. n
- Work on both diesel and gasoline-powered ambulances and support vehicles. n
- Conduct engine, transmission, brake system, and tire service repairs. n
- Maintain service records and documentation for all fleet repairs. n
- Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards. n
- Pick up and deliver vehicles requiring service or repair. n
- Perform repairs and maintenance on ambulance gurneys and related equipment. n
- Utilize lifts, including two-post and drive-on lifts, for vehicle servicing. n
- Use diagnostic equipment, transmission flush machines, and air conditioning evacuation tools. n
- Operate pneumatic tools, grinders, drills, and other specialized equipment. n
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in automotive repair . n
- ASE certification or equivalent mechanic certification . n
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in fleet vehicle maintenance. n
- Experience with diesel and gasoline engine repairs. n
- Familiarity with ambulance-specific modifications and equipment. n
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure. n
- Ability to use diagnostic tools and computerized vehicle systems. n
- Welding, hydraulics, and electrical system experience is a plus. n
Shop Equipment and Machinery Knowledge

- Two-post and drive-on lifts for vehicle servicing. n
- Diagnostic tools such as OBD scanners and digital multimeters. n
- Hand tools including wrenches, screwdrivers, and socket sets. n
- Power tools such as drills, impact wrenches, and grinders. n
- Pneumatic tools, including air wrenches, sanders, and air ratchets. n
- Transmission flush machines and air conditioning evacuation equipment. n
- Tire machine and balancer n
Physical Requirements:

- Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. n
- Comfortable working in enclosed spaces and around exhaust fumes. n
- Frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling to access vehicle components. n
- Ability to climb ladders and work overhead, as needed. n
- Standing for long periods while performing maintenance work. n
- Use of hand and power tools requiring strong hand-eye coordination. n
- Exposure to extreme temperatures while working indoors and outdoors. n
Hourly Range
