About The White House Historical Association

Founded in 1961 by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, the White House Historical Association is a private, nonpartisan nonprofit organization with a mission to enhance the understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the Executive Mansion. Mrs. Kennedy’s vision was to preserve the rich history of the White House and to share it with the American people—not through taxpayer dollars, but through the generosity of individuals who believe in the power of education, civics, and culture. Today, the Association remains a vital force in telling the evolving story of American history through the unique lens of the White House, free from any government funds.

The Association accomplishes this mission through robust research, award-winning publications, exhibitions, public programs, digital outreach, education initiatives, the preservation of the White House itself, and acquisitions to expand its permanent collection. Whether reaching more than 1,000,000 students through learning experiences, training nationwide teachers through hands-on professional development programs, or maintaining the historic rooms and furnishings of the White House, the Association brings history to life through a range of dynamic platforms. The organization also manages a prolific publishing arm, a national retail operation, and over the last decade, has introduced a growing philanthropic program supported by a dedicated community of more than 48,000 donors across all 50 states.

In 2024, the Association unveiled The People’s House: A White House Experience, a transformative, immersive museum located just one block west of the White House. Importantly, The People’s House is a free experience, maintaining Mrs. Kennedy’s belief that “the White House belongs to the American people.” This state-of-the-art facility offers a new way for the public to engage with White House history through interactive exhibits, digital storytelling, and a full-scale replica of the Oval Office. The People’s House is a signature initiative that advances the Association’s commitment to accessibility, civic engagement, and experiential education, and it serves as the Association’s gift to the nation on the occasion of the semiquincentennial, America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

Under the leadership of President Stewart D. McLaurin and a distinguished Board of Directors, the Association continues to grow in both impact and visibility. The Association is fueled by a spirit of public service and civic purpose, working alongside the National Park Service, presidential families, scholars, educators, and philanthropists to ensure that the White House remains a living symbol of American history, preserved for, and accessible to, We the People.

About the Opportunity

The Vice President of Individual and Institutional Giving will join the White House Historical Association at a moment of significant momentum and national visibility. With the opening of The People’s House: A White House Experience and the approach of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the Association is poised for transformational growth in its philanthropic impact. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Vice President will lead the Association’s efforts in principal, major, mid-level, and planned giving, advancing a unified fundraising strategy that connects individual donors, foundations, and corporations with the mission to preserve, protect, and provide access to White House history.

This role offers a unique blend of leadership and frontline fundraising. The Vice President will manage and mentor a team of high-performing gift officers and donor relations professionals, while also cultivating a personal portfolio of top prospects capable of seven- and eight-figure gifts. The successful candidate will bring a track record of strategic, donor-centered fundraising and a proven ability to build and steward complex philanthropic relationships. Working closely with the Association’s National Council members and executive leadership, the Vice President will serve as both strategist and relationship builder, aligning philanthropic goals with organizational priorities to drive long-term impact.

As the White House Historical Association continues to evolve from a new, fast-growing development shop to a fully professionalized, long-term high-performing team, the Vice President will play a pivotal role in shaping its culture, tiers of fundraising programs, and systems. This includes advancing cross-department collaboration, strengthening data infrastructure and prospect strategy (particularly in Salesforce), and fostering a climate of trust, accountability, and shared success. The Vice President will serve as a key peer partner to the newly established role of Associate Vice President of Development Strategy and Operations, ensuring that front-line fundraising efforts are supported by efficient operations, clear processes, and scalable systems. The new leadership team of the development operation will include close collaboration between the Chief Development Officer and their two leadership direct reports: the Vice President of Individual and Institutional Giving and the Associate Vice President of Development Strategy and Operations.

This opportunity will appeal to a strategic and emotionally intelligent leader who thrives in dynamic, mission-driven environments. Ideal candidates will possess a deep appreciation for American history and civic engagement, a nonpartisan mindset, and the interpersonal finesse to work across political, geographic, and cultural boundaries. The White House Historical Association development team is energized, talented, and deeply committed to the mission. The incoming Vice President will be charged with empowering and mentoring this team, sustaining strong donor relationships, and helping to write the next chapter of philanthropic growth for one of the country’s most respected cultural institutions.
