To perform technical functions in the access of and use of information technology within the Department of Social Services in support of agency computers, local, and wide area network operations including interfacing with other systems, and troubleshooting. INTERNAL CANIDATES ONLY Duties

Communicates with department staff to determine information systems requirements; evaluates requirements and determines hardware and software needs. Coordinates computer programming, application maintenance and hardware / software maintenance with the County Information Systems staff as necessary. Provides user training, support and assistance as needed. Controls user access and provides for system security. Troubleshoots equipment, network and system failures; troubleshoots communication problems. Manages department databases; prepares computer-generated reports and spreadsheets as requested. Removes unnecessary files on a regular basis to keep system operating at peak efficiency. Researches and recommends the purchase of hardware and commercial software as appropriate. Maintains inventory of computer hardware and software. Provides system security and provides reports to the State. Attends various meetings as required; attends classes, workshops, seminars, etc., to maintain job knowledge and skills. Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance from staff regarding information technology systems and operations. Gathers information for and prepares a variety of technical reports for decision-making purposes and as required by the department, County and/or other agencies. Operates a variety of equipment such as computers, printers, fax machine, copier, calculator, telephone. Uses clerical and computer supplies, small hand tools, etc. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other department heads, other County employees, sales representatives, service providers, and the general public. Performs general clerical duties as required, including entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, etc. Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the County as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Computer Support Technician. Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Thorough knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the department. Knowledge in the areas of computer technology and maintenance, information systems management, data processing, etc. Knowledge of varying business operations and is able to implement computer applications to meet business needs. Knowledge of the standard tools, materials and practices of the industry. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry. Knowledge of proper English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Knowledge of modern office practices and technology. Skilled in the care and use of required tools and equipment. Skilled in good organizational, technical and human relations. Ability to determine appropriate hardware and software requirements for various department operations. Ability to provide efficient user support and assistance. Ability to make minor adjustments and repairs to computer hardware as needed. Ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Ability to make required mathematical calculations. Ability to read and interpret technical materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Ability to assemble and analyze information and make written reports and records in a concise, clear and effective manner. Ability to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in computer technology or data processing supplemented by one to two years of experience in computer systems operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Have been fingerprinted by the employing agency. Have produced a negative result on a drug screen. Make full disclosure of criminal charges and Domestic Violence Orders upon application. Be of good moral character. Have a thorough background investigation conducted by the employing agency, to include a personal interview prior to employment. Not have a prohibitive criminal history record. Valid North Carolina Driver's License Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to work with data and figures, to use measurement devices, to operate a computer terminal, and to read extensively. Vacation Leave: Employees accrue annual leave monthly and may use accrued leave upon approval after the probationary period is completed.
