Streets & Utilities Operations Technician

Working in a team-focused environment within a small department, the selected candidate will work on a variety of street infrastructure as well as water, wastewater, and storm water maintenance work and other projects. An employee in this position will have the opportunity to operate a variety of light-duty trucks, dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, street sweepers, and front-end loaders. The City of Louisville's Street Maintenance division is part of the Public Works department. The division is responsible for maintaining approximately two hundred and sixty (260) miles of streets within the City's 8-square-mile jurisdiction. The Louisville Operations Division is responsible for street maintenance and snow plowing, all water and sewer main maintenance, water meter replacement and reading, utility locates, and storm drainage. 4-day work schedule (10-hour days Monday-Thursday) May through September 5-day work schedule in the winter (7:00 AM - 3:30 PM) 40-hour work weeks, with opportunity for overtime during weather emergencies

Examples of Duties
Operate street sweepers, light duty trucks and dump trucks, tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes, and snowplows in the performance of operations maintenance and construction projects and assignments Load and haul fill rock, asphalt, and other road patch materials Apply asphalt patches, asphalt overlay, set concrete forms, and perform other street and construction repairs and maintenance functions Install and repair new and existing utility and service lines Operate or assist in the operation of monitoring equipment; clear utility lines and repair breaks in the lines as needed; seal manholes; use high pressure hoses to clean sewers Plow and remove snow from City right-of-ways during and after snowstorms Perform routine and preventative maintenance on various equipment that may include checking temperature, greasing, checking oil levels, cleaning, and painting Install and replaces water meters of all sizes Repair and maintain fire hydrants Perform preventative maintenance and minor adjustments on equipment prior to, during, and after operating Act as a flag person to guide and direct traffic at construction and repair sites Read water meters with automatic meter reading equipment Operations Technician level III will occasionally act as crew lead Regular and predictable attendance required Other duties as required This position is considered a critical/essential worker and is therefore responsible for responding to emergencies and/or disasters that may require additional overtime or adjustments to your normal schedule to fit the needs of the organization. General Qualifications
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent educational credential Some experience in operating streets and drainage construction and repair equipment preferred An equivalent combination of acceptable training, education, and experience may be considered The selected candidate must meet minimum qualifications for a Technician I, and technician level will be selected based on qualifications and experience as deemed acceptable by the City of Louisville. Up to one year's experience working with Streets & Utilities Operations CDL (B) or ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire (DOH) Flagger certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months from DOH Trench & Shoring Safety Certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months from DOH First Aid/ CPR/ AED certified or ability to obtain within six (6) months from DOH Streets & Utilities Operations Technician II Requirements
One (1) to two (2) years' experience working with Streets & Utilities Operations Water Distribution Class 1 certification Wastewater Collection Class 1 certification Confined Space Entry certification Traffic Control Technician certification Streets & Utilities Operations Technician III Requirements
Two (2) to four (4) years' experience working with Streets & Utilities Operations Water Distribution Class 2 and 3 certifications Wastewater Collection Class 2 and 3 certifications Traffic Control Supervisor certification Trench Safety Supervisor certification Stormwater Inspector training Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and traffic laws necessary to perform assigned work Knowledge of asphalt and concrete repair Knowledge of the operation and use of light duty vehicles and equipment Knowledge of the geography of the City of Louisville Knowledge of water and wastewater distribution and collection systems and/or knowledge in other related fields Skill in the safe operation of heavy equipment in rough, uneven, or slippery conditions Skill in the use of equipment necessary to maintain a water distribution and wastewater collection system Ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instructions Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation Ability to work from and read sketches, maps, blueprints, diagrams, and charts Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public Ability to perform strenuous work in all types of weather conditions Ability to be on call, work nights, holidays, and weekends Ability to report to work within thirty-five to forty (35-40) minutes when on call License, Registration, or Certification: Refer to requirements under the 'Education, Training, and Experience' heading for explanation of certification type and level requirements Current driver's license in good standing with no major violations in the past three (3) years
