As the City's newest Waste Prevention Specialist, you will actively support the City's stated mission and values. You will be in charge of developing and implementing city-wide waste prevention initiatives, programs, and engagement opportunities to encourage waste prevention and diversion behaviors. This includes community events, social marketing campaigns, educational workshops, and incentive/rebate programs. Examples of the work performed include: Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers. Assists with formulating and monitoring budgets for assigned areas of responsibility. Prioritizes day-to-day activities in order to reach the goals and objectives of the Division. Makes recommendations to supervisor regarding operational procedures. Follows Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations and City policies and procedures. Assists the Sustainability Director with the development of innovative programs that promote program goals. Researches and coordinates recommendations set forth by the Sustainability Commission. Monitors and tracks education and outreach efforts for participation, cost, and effectiveness. Researches and applies for state, federal, and private funding opportunities that support the Sustainability Section's mission. Reports on grant updates as required. Coordinates with partners and other City staff to implement strategies and actions associated with Division goals. Provides support to the Sustainability Director, Climate Program Manager, and ongoing interdepartmental sustainability efforts. Represents the Sustainability Division at local and national meetings, seminars, and conferences. Works with local media outlets to promote programmatic goals. Conducts education and outreach to raise awareness about Sustainability Division initiatives. Analyzes best practices to reduce greenhouse emissions; conducts a technological analysis of organization and community emissions; scenario planning and determines best practices for municipal organization and the Flagstaff community; conducts fiscal, environmental, and community impact analysis. Monitors and tracks community sustainability efforts, measures progress, and reports on that progress. Establishes and implements interdepartmental projects related to energy management, carbon reduction strategies, waste diversion strategies, education, reporting, innovation, and collaboration. Coordinates intergovernmental agreements and service contracts pertaining to community sustainability. Collaborates with internal partners to promote municipal sustainability efforts at municipal facilities. Other duties as assigned. Waste Prevention Specialist responsibilities include: Develops and implements city-wide waste prevention initiatives, programs, and volunteer engagement opportunities to encourage waste prevention and diversion behaviors including community events, social marketing campaigns, educational workshops, and incentive programs (rebates) Collaborates with the city's Solid Waste Division to achieve Flagstaff's Zero Waste Goals Carries out the implementation of the City of Flagstaff's Rethink Waste Plan in collaboration with internal and external partners to shift city operations to achieve zero waste goals Develops and coordinates the implementation of policies and infrastructure that increase waste diversion, improve waste data collection, and increase access to recycling services in partnership with the city's Solid Waste Section Assists with future planning related to community-wide reuse, recycling and composting for the City of Flagstaff Coordinates wide-spread marketing efforts through owned, earned, and paid media in collaboration with the city's Public Affairs team to expand public outreach and promote greater understanding of waste diversion in Flagstaff Participates in statewide coalitions and groups focused on innovative solutions to waste, including but not limited to Sustainable Cities Network and Arizona Forward Develops, implements, and manages food recovery program in partnership with a community organization to increase diversion of organic waste from the landfill Works with the city's Parks Recreation Open Space and Events to implement zero waste principles into the city's special event permitting process Develops waste prevention strategies that are aligned with greenhouse gas emission reduction goals, including calculated impacts. Collaborate with the Climate Section to review emission reduction potential Supports interdivisional staff (IDS) review of new development concept and site plans and assist with waste diversion planning for all future commercial and multifamily development Manages waste prevention related webpages on the city's website Provides professional, technical, or administrative guidance to city divisions and city leadership Minimum requirements include: Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Public Relations or Administration, or related field. Two years of project coordination experience in resource conservation and/or sustainability practices or related field. Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above minimum requirements. Desired experience and training includes: Ability to utilize design principles to create attractive promotional materials, internal reports and/or communication materials. Experience marketing behavior change initiatives, building relationships with stakeholders, or collaborating across organizations or with partners. Knowledgeable of successful social marketing techniques and experience managing social media accounts. Experience working with and building trust within diverse communities. Experience with federal grants, other forms of federal funding, or federal reporting. One year of supervisory experience, project coordination, budget management, or community organizing experience. Other requirements include: Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver's license. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
