In the process, we are leveraging the deep expertise of Library staff, developing services that support new avenues of research, and expanding access to and preservation of scholarly resources in ways that advance the goals of the University community and the needs of the next generation of scholars. Job Summary: Under the direction of the Circulation Supervisor on duty, this position is responsible for all the patron service and circulation functions of the Mansueto library during their shift. This position will handle the scope of questions, requests, and concerns that library patrons bring to the circulation desk. This position also performs daily storage and retrieval tasks using the automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) and performs regular troubleshooting of the system and its related software and workstations. They may provide backup supervision of counter attendants and the Reading Room in the absence of the Circulation Supervisor. They will be responsible for certain aspects of inventory projects including accessioning new material and removing material to be stored off-site. Performs opening/closing routines as needed. Responsibilities: Performs all circulation desk responsibilities including checking in and out of items, assisting with access and requests including ILL Building Use Only, media, and other non-standard circulating materials. Processes items through the Automated Storage and Retrieval System, completing basic troubleshooting of mechanical and software issues when they arise. Systematically removes materials from Mansueto inventory that is slated for off-site storage. Helps process and transport materials in preparation for regular shipments. Assists with training and overseeing the work of student circulation assistants. In absence of a Circulation Supervisor, helps direct student circulation assistants in maintaining Mansueto circulation policies, procedures, and service standards. Oversees basic department functions and maintains quiet space reading room policies in absence of a supervisor. Opens or closes the building. Handles general inquiries relating to building and security while on duty. Provides initial response to emergencies. Performs other related work as needed. Competencies: Demonstrated capacity to both give and receive direction, collaborate effectively within a diverse team, and operate with a high level of independence. Skilled in serving patrons and enforcing library policies with clarity, consistency, patience, and empathy. Proficient in identifying, responding to, and appropriately referring problems while exercising sound judgment and discretion. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Education, Experience, or Certifications: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Bachelors degree preferred. Experience: Significant customer service experience required. Library experience preferred. Technical Knowledge or Skills: Experience with MS Office, email, and internet work applications required. Willingness to operate and troubleshoot heavy machinery. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: Scheduled hours: 4:00 p.m.
12:00 a.m., Wednesday through Sunday, with flexibility to adjust during changes to Library hours, staff shortages, or absences. Requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods (up to 4+ hours), make repetitive hand and wrist movements, and bend, crouch, or stoop as needed. Must be able to lift and carry up to 49 lbs, and push or pull items up to 99 lbs. Involves safe operation of heavy machinery and equipment. Requires sufficient hearing for sound discrimination and visual acuity for prolonged focus on print and digital materials, including color and depth perception. Pay Range: $18.93
